on racism and the riots

Dec 16, 2005 11:37

today i was trying to think of a way to write back to the recent violence in sydney. i ended up finding myself unable to rise to the challenge. so here are some quotes to think about instead:

Racism is man's gravest threat to man - the maximum of hatred for a minimum of reason. - Abraham Joshua Heschel

When people like me, they tell me it is in spite of my colour. When they dislike me, they point out that it is not because of my colour. - Frantz Fanon.

I imagine one of the reasons people cling to their hates so stubbornly is because they sense, once hate is gone, they will be forced to deal with pain. - James Baldwin

Lukewarm acceptance is more bewildering than outright rejection. - Martin Luther King Jr.

Hatred is one long wait. - René Maran
