I usually reserve praise for people I like, but…

::golf clap::

Well played, McCain. You picked someone young and well-liked that has the potential to pull you back into relevancy, and snag those disillusioned Hillary supporters at the same time. You’re more calculating than many gave you credit for.

But it's also not going to scare off the Republican Christian base that is already a little wary of McCain. This is why it's such a brilliant tactical move. He chooses a woman which makes him look all maverick and not-a-typical-old-white-man, he gets to court the centrist non-liberals who liked Hilary for her gender but also for her status-quoness and who don't have strong opinions about actual feminist issues, he chooses a woman who is fiercely anti-choice which makes his opponents within his own party happy.

And the timing was perfect since he's been fanning the media flames since the democratic convention of the implication that there's hoardes of Hilary supporters ready to vote for him _anyway_ (before he announced this pick). I don't think those hoardes actually exist, but this timing couldn't be better with the media already buzzing about Hilary defectors.

He won't get the hardcore liberals or feminists. But he'll get a few folks who were on the fence and leaning democratic but who are for whatever reason unimpressed by Obama.

It's worth a golf clap for sure.
