A Quiet 2010

Jan 04, 2010 00:09

As per normal, being fashionably late is going to my excuse spécial for this post xD

2009 was pretty fun for me, more so due to the fact that it was the year following ORD and whatnot, and having a lack of male friends (well i got 1 actively) blogging about 09 and other nonsense on my friends page i feel obliged to repeat what the girls did 2 years ago:

(With some retrospection on my past journal entries it seems my past year covers about all of 2 pages =p and my 09 new years post was 11/12 days overdue so this is an improvement)

Start of the year was just fresh off the 2008-2009 Taiwan trip with my sis and cousins which was super fun and more meaningful than some random tour, especially getting to live life closer to the people of the country (which i didn't get to experience in Japan but heck).

NCS stint (split into 2 blocks) happened next. Very fun time, had the opportunity to use the gym there and also to watch several VODs on my phone until the .flv converter on TL stopped working and the Orbit downloads didnt run on my phone. NCS is seriously awesome even if the work was somewhat mundane my supervisors were super nice and one of them even has a kid in RI and stuff lol. Oh and their canteen powerlevel is over9000 especially the prata, and the western is pretty cheap (but i got sorethroat having fried stuff almost everyday hahaha)

Rediscovery of Starcraft came somewhere around that period as well, and even though to date i've not yet achieved a D+ 1v1 i've still gotten a C- in 2v2 Iccup ranks thanks to Gzealot and Nem. Also for those who find this nugget of information arcane it most probably is haahahaaha.

School starting was pretty okay, other than the supposed pressure to study and get and honours CAP and whatnot (which i almost cmi which is almost as good as not making it). Orientation was given a miss by the antisocial and wet-blanket moi, but in my defence i went for the flag day and 1 of the talks (yippee for society) and helped me cousin for her super dorm room moving night =p.

NUSSO was interesting, but got nothin much to say about it. Met new people (2 exchange students) met old people people that i knew from YO and other places (well i guess not other places... well) and if given the chance i would be chilling out in CFA in between classes but im in fricking Sci Fac and all them muggers coursemates wouldnt give a damn if someone nuked CFA so i guess that wont be happening as much as i would like it to (well during the exam period CFA was the best bomb shelter for me =p). NUSSO open air concert was pretty windy but i guess all went pretty well. The penthouse level of the Nat Library was cool, and Mr Foo got a bottle of Finlandia with words scribbled all around (well Finlandia is written by Sibelius so its fricken cool OK).

TPO was a pretty marvelous experience, and gave me the chance to fall in love with Sibelius' writing once more (well ironically the question "have you played a Sibelius orchestral work before? other than Finlandia" came up during the period NUSSO was rehearsing Fin) but this time manifested in the symphonies 1 & 3. Although that fell through (still remeber that sunday rehearsal with 6 strings) the Midsummer Night's Dream was probably the most fun concert I've performed in (and had the pleasure to witness fresh acting) with choir + narrator/actor whos actually a mighty wicked trumpeteer himself.

Exams came and went (almost wrote gone) and school overall was treated in a pretty antisocial way by me, so i'll try to improve that this year. Results were pretty meh as a result of my gosu studying skills but my elective (really enjoyable one too) was not too bad considering that i struggled significantly when quoting for my main assignment paper.

To round off the year there were a few gigs including the Hallelujah Chorus at Newton Life Church (pretty interesting) conducted by the same Rev who conducted the Bach B Minor Mass (o i forgot when that was, about middle of the year i just checked). One of my cousins got married (yay!), and i flew off to Japan on their Golden Route tour <- links to 1st day's photos. Sorry too lazy to do a dedicated writeup, most of the events can be seen pictorially. Bascially I was totally astounded by the very polite and considerate manners of the Japanese, who i mistakenly thought were pretty rowdy (after seeing drunk examples in Meridien/Cyberdome area) and funny (thanks to anime). Well i did see some drunk guys but overall their service is excellent and despite the prices there its about the same as living in Orchard Road, other than the taxi fare. Disneyland (my 1st/virgin experience) and Mt Fuji (also) were also very very good experiences, especially with the weather on our side for the latter.

Over the past year I've realised many things:
* Sometime, less is indeed more
* Despite being a grammar nazi, i just saw a post that i made on an anime forum with a whole host of grammar/spelling/syntax errors that were left uncorrected FML
* Some things are better left unsaid
* Working too fast can actually be a bad thing (and you would have thought the preceding 2 years would have taught me that)
* Sibelius rocks (well i always knew that, but in a different way)
* I either look really old and/or really out of shape ("what u did NS alr?"; "u look like 25" (communicated via hand signals in Thai restaurant in Tokyo; "go spike ur hair")) FFFML
* Its better to let some things go than to kill yourself over it
* The hardest person to whom a promise can be kept is oneself (<- i love making up the syntax for this)

New Year Resolutions?
1) Be more sociable?
2) 4.3+ cap *_*
3) Have more urgency now that im gonna be fricken old 22, participate in more activities and whatnot.
