Serendipity

~;~

Yun Ho didn’t know what he was doing at a gay bar, sitting awkwardly by himself at an empty table, when he was, in fact, a player for the right team.

He sat rigid in his seat, eyes fixated on his hands clutched tightly together. Every now and then someone would attempt to take the empty seat in front of him, asking if he didn’t mind company, but Yun Ho would always refuse. He knew better.

Homosexuals were all the same - they talk, they flirt, next thing anybody knows, they’re having sex all over the place. Once that’s done they do it again and again - only this time, with different people. His best friend, Yoo Chun, was a living, breathing testament to that; and speaking of Yoo Chun, he now remembered why he was at that gay bar in the first place.

Yun Ho clasped his hands together even tighter.

If it wasn’t already obvious, Yoo Chun was a notorious player in the gay world - hooking up with different people every night. In fact, he’d slept with too many people that he couldn’t even remember the names of those he’d slept with (it was a wonder and a miracle that he hadn’t caught some sexually transmitted disease by now). He was the sole exception to Yun Ho’s homophobia, for Yun Ho had learned to accept Yoo Chun’s sexuality and everything else that came along with it despite his utter dislike for the homosexual population. But there were times when he really put Yun Ho on edge; times like now, for instance.

“If he thinks that dragging me to some gay bar filled with filthy homos is going to change my views on gay men…” Yun Ho trailed off angrily, pausing to shudder when he saw two men just a few feet away of him engaging in what seemed to be a never-ending make out session. “He’s absolutely wrong.”

Concluding he’d had enough, Yun Ho abruptly stood up, chair scraping against the floor, and headed straight for the exit; not bothering to look for Yoo Chun. Knowing the latter, he was probably in the bathroom exchanging body heat with some random guy whose name he was unlikely to remember; pounding into each other in a small, cramped up cubicle.

The thought alone sent uncomfortable chills crawling down Yun Ho’s spine.

Fuck this, I’m heading home. Yun Ho texted right as he had reached the exit. The cool air that tickled his skin and the pale, silver moonlight that washed over him served as a huge relief - it had meant that he was free from the confines of the homosexual hellhole, in his own words.

He hated that place and wanted to be as far away from it as possible, swearing that he’d never go anywhere near it again. In fact, he was so devoted to leaving that he didn’t even realize the presence of another walking right in front of him. The result was nearly disastrous - he had bumped into someone, and had it not been for his killer reflexes, the other would have most likely fallen to the ground.

“I’m so sorry. I wasn’t looking where I was-“ Yun Ho’s sentence was interrupted too early when he had laid eyes upon the one he had just bumped into - skin whiter than snow, hair as dark as the night, full, plump lips made wet by a sharp, red tongue, deep and emotive eyes which had as much depth as the sea. He gulped. “-going.”

“It’s all right,” came the soft reply (and Yun Ho wasn’t sure if that was the only thing that came), “um… if you don’t mind me asking, did you just come from…” the beauty before him pointed to the dreadful gay bar he had just come from, and he immediately cringed.

“I hate bars.” Yun Ho quickly replied, “My friend forced me to come.”

“All right.” The beautiful stranger laughed a little, and Yun Ho felt his knees buckle at the melodious tone that drifted into his ears. “I’m Kim Jae Joong, by the way.”

Yun Ho was quick to accept the hand that was outstretched and shook it like there was no more tomorrow, “Jung Yun Ho.” He had always been privy to skinship. Heterosexual skinship only, of course.

Jae Joong giggled slightly at Yun Ho, highly amused, “Can I have my hand back?”

“Your… what…?” Yun Ho hummed, too busy ogling the other to concentrate. Jae Joong was just too perfect not to be stared at.

“My hand,” Jae Joong repeated, smiling, “can I have it back?”

“Right, sorry.” Yun Ho apologized, immediately letting go of the other’s hand. The silence that fell upon the two of them afterward was awfully awkward, and Jae Joong was about to break that silence when Yun Ho broke it first. “Would you like to go for coffee tomorrow?”

Jae Joong couldn’t help but giggle at the sight of a flustered Yun Ho and asked, “Coffee? Isn’t that dramatically cliché?”

Yun Ho brought his hand to the back of his neck and began to rub it, pursing his lips as his heart fluttered uncontrollably in his chest. Coffee was too cliché, he had to admit. “Where… where do you want to meet me, then? Y-you know… assuming you would go out with me…”

“I never said no, though.” Jae Joong smiled, and Yun Ho’s knees almost gave out again. He could feel the palms of his hands beginning to moisten, and subtly wiped them against his jeans; just in case Jae Joong decided to take hold of his hand sometime in the near future. “I’ll call you.”

“Yeah…” Yun Ho swooned, melting under Jae Joong’s gaze. He could almost swear that he’d be a mushy puddle of goo in the next minute. The feeling he’d get whenever Jae Joong’s eyes would meet his almost felt tangible; like it was an actual living being, making him feel all sorts of sensations he’d never even knew existed.

“Um, Yun Ho…?”

“Hmm?”

“Here, take my phone.”

Yun Ho shakily took the phone from Jae Joong’s hands and stared at it for a good minute, before averting his gaze back to Jae Joong in slight confusion, “You want me to have your phone?”

Jae Joong simply laughed, head shaking in disagreement, “No, silly. I need you to type your number in there.”

“Of course.” Yun Ho immediately responded, jamming in a bunch of digits hurriedly as though it would make up for his idiocy. “I knew that.” He said as he returned the phone to Jae Joong. The other smiled at him and called the number on the screen, and when Yun Ho’s pocket lit up and musical notes flew around, resonating in the midnight air, Jae Joong smiled once more.

“Now you have my number.” Jae Joong whispered almost seductively, hand outstretching to trace along Yun Ho’s jaw line ever so slightly; just about teasingly. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

All Yun Ho could do was sigh dreamily as he watched Jae Joong walk off into the distance; disappearing into the darkness.

“What a woman.” He couldn’t help but say, hand reaching up to touch the area of skin Jae Joong had just grazed. Yun Ho looked up at the star-lit sky and at the moon shimmering in all its silver glory, and sighed contentedly.

How serendipitous it was for him to meet Jae Joong that night.

~;~

“She’s so wonderful, Yoo Chun! If you met her, I’m pretty sure you’d turn straight.”

“I highly doubt that.” Yoo Chun shook his head in disagreement before taking a big sip of his morning coffee. He’d offer Yun Ho some, but seeing as how the latter came over at eight in the morning just to flail over a girl he had barely met the night before, Yoo Chun deemed Yun Ho didn’t deserve any.

“Well, whatever.” Yun Ho huffed and rolled his eyes, arms folding in front of his chest, “She’s mine anyway. I know that she is the one.”

“Sure she is.” Yoo Chun replied pejoratively and meandered over to his couch and sat down, placing his coffee down on the table in front of him and picking up the laptop that had been lying idly beside him on the couch. “What’s the name of this chick again?” he asked, not looking at Yun Ho, but at the screen before him.

“Kim Jae Joong.”

“Kim Jae Joong?” Yoo Chun repeated and Yun Ho nodded, “The name sounds familiar… I think I fucked someone whose cousin’s name was Kim Jae Joong.”

Yun Ho laughed and walked over to Yoo Chun until he was standing right in front of the latter, “You mean to say, you remember the name of the cousin of some guy you did, but you don’t remember the name of the guy himself?”

“Exactly what I mean to say.” Yoo Chun answered nonchalantly; fingers jabbing at the keyboard, eyes still glued to the screen. At his actions, Yun Ho couldn’t help but feel curious and wonder what Yoo Chun was up to.

“What are you doing on that laptop, anyway?” he asked, trying to sound flippant and appear deadpan. It was a good thing Yoo Chun was too busy with his laptop to spare Yun Ho a glance, or else the latter would have been totally given away.

“Searching for Kim Jae Joong on facebook.”

“What?”

Yoo Chun stopped typing to pause and look at Yun Ho; disdain written all over his face. “I know you’re straight, but surely you aren’t deaf. I told you; I’m searching for her on facebook.”

Yun Ho crossed his arms, choosing to pay no heed to the jab at his sexuality - which was completely orthodox sexuality, at that - and scoffed “How are you even sure you’ll find her? And what if she doesn’t even have facebook?”

“Then she’s socially awkward and has no hope.” Yoo Chun replied before sparing Yun Ho a fleeting glance, “I mean, who doesn't have facebook? Even the socially awkward penguin has facebook.”

“Not everyone who doesn’t have facebook is socially awkward, you stereotypical bastard.”

“Whom you love nonetheless.”

“Whom I love nonetheless.” Yun Ho flippantly added.

“So, um, Yun Ho… does your Jae Joong happen to have relatively short hair?” Yoo Chun asked suddenly.

“Yeah.”

“Is it black?”

“Yes.”

“Does your Jae Joong have skin as white as shit and eyes as round as-“

“Okay, first of all, shit isn’t white,” Yun Ho interrupted to berate Yoo Chun on his poor knowledge of colors, “second, yes, she’s really white. Why?”

Yoo Chun said nothing for a moment, but instead shifted glances from his laptop to Yun Ho, biting his lip to suppress his snickers. It wasn’t long, though, before Yoo Chun couldn’t take it anymore and burst into a stream of laughter; the sound bouncing off the walls to create loud echoes in the room.

“What’s so funny?” Yun Ho frowned, irritated at his best friend’s sudden mirth.

“Dude,” Yoo Chun said, clutching onto his stomach in an attempt to stop laughing; it was hardly helping, though, “Kim Jae Joong… Kim Jae Joong is a guy.”

“Lies!” Yun Ho hissed, proceeding to sit down beside Yoo Chun and grab the laptop from the latter. “Stop trying to make me gay. I’m pretty sure you’ve got things all wrong. This is probably a different Jae Joong.”

“No… Yun Ho… he… Kim Jae… Joong… only one result…” Yoo Chun said in between laughter, and it only irritated Yun Ho more.

“Quit trolling me you-OHMYGOD.” Yun Ho’s eyes dilated to the point that they felt like they were about to pop out of his head any second. The name on the profile clearly read “Kim Jae Joong” and the photo on the left-hand side was most definitely the Jae Joong he had met the previous night but… the gender displayed… read male.

“I told you.” Yoo Chun, who still was laughing like a hyena, grabbed his laptop from Yun Ho and closed it before setting it down on the table in front.

“I can’t believe it.” Yun Ho soliloquized; feeling all of a sudden woozy as the world around him slowly began spinning. “I… I asked… I asked out… a… a… a guy.”

Yun Ho was about to faint. He knew it. His vision had already started to get bleary, and he began to feel lightheaded. He could barely hear Yoo Chun’s calls to him and was about to completely pass out, when all of a sudden, a shrill ring brought him back to his senses; making him jump off the couch and fall.

He took out his cellphone from his pocket and read the name on the screen - Jae Joong. “Shit! She’s calling! I-I mean he’s calling! What do I do?” Yun Ho panicked; searching for answers from Yoo Chun.

“Well, for starters, you could answer it.” Yoo Chun retorted; receiving a frown in return. Despite that, however, Yun Ho did answer the call.

“Hello?”

“Hey, it’s me. I’m not calling too early, am I?”

“What? N-no, I was already awake.”

“All right. I just called to ask you if 4 sounds good?”

“Um…” Yun Ho looked up at Yoo Chun from the floor, eyes begging for some kind of answer, but all he received were snickers. “Yeah. 4 sounds… 4 sounds good.”

“All right, I’ll see you later then. Bye.”

As soon as the call ended, Yun Ho dropped his phone on the floor and brought his hands to his face; groaning into them. “Why couldn’t I just have lied and said that I was busy?”

“Because you’re secretly gay, too?” Yoo Chun suggested seriously. Yun Ho then reached out for his phone and threw it at Yoo Chun; and the latter was lucky that he ducked.

“Shit. I’m going on a date with another guy.” Yun Ho groaned again, and at that moment, he wished that the floor would turn into a giant black hole and suck him inside; swallowing him away from the world and his date with a beautiful gay man who went by the name of Kim Jae Joong.

~;~

“Just cut the date short, Yun Ho. Cut it short.” Yun Ho told himself repeatedly; letting the words regurgitate until he was sure that the thought would sink in. As he reached the entrance of the café wherein his date with Jae Joong would take place, he stuffed his hands deep into the pockets of his jeans, as though searching for courage like it was buried in his pockets. He let out his breath with a whoosh and pushed the door open slowly.

His head instinctively turned to look for Jae Joong; and he wasn’t sure if he should have felt relieved to find him already sitting down at a table waiting for him, or worried shit for his sexuality and his sanity. Jae Joong looked absolutely stunning in his outfit, as simple as it was - which consisted of a pair of black jeans, a white low cut v-neck, and a pair of black boots that almost reached up to his knees.

Yun Ho gulped and felt his pants beginning to tighten. Fuck. Fuckfuckfuckfuck I should just turn back now while he’s not looking and send him a text message that I died or something. He took a step backwards, and was about to take another one before the beauty some feet away noticed him and called out his name.

Yun Ho stopped trying to escape and walked straight to his doom; suddenly remembering a quote from a movie he had watched just a few days before - One does not simply walk into Mordor.

One does not simply walk into Jae Joong.

He stopped in his tracks to frown at himself before continuing, realizing the stupidity of his thoughts.

“I was beginning to think you weren’t coming.” Was what Yun Ho was greeted with when he took the seat opposite Jae Joong. Yun Ho chuckled awkwardly and said nothing, raising his hand slightly to call for a waitress.

When he had finished ordering, Jae Joong spoke again; expression deadpan, but tone overflowing with disappointment. “I think I know what’s going on.”

Yun Ho finally answered, “What do you mean?”

Jae Joong sighed and pushed the cup of coffee that Yun Ho hadn’t noticed before aside, resting his elbows on the cool table. His eyes were downcast, eyelashes not allowing Yun Ho to determine whether or not his eyes were closed. “This makes you the seventh,” the beautiful man said, not answering Yun Ho’s question.

Yun Ho arched his eyebrows in confusion, and only spoke after the waitress had returned with his order of black coffee and left. “The seventh what?”

Jae Joong lifted his head so that he could meet gazes with Yun Ho. His face expressed nothing, but his eyes told everything; and the hurt that Yun Ho could see unnerved him. “You’re the seventh to confuse me for a woman and ask me out on a date.” He said, leaning back in his seat. He smiled wanly at Yun Ho, “Leave now, it’s okay. I won’t hold it against you. I mean, it’s not your fault that you thought I was a-“

“I never thought you were a woman.” Yun Ho blurted out, though his words flowed out so smoothly and naturally, they seemed true. He wasn’t sure of what he was saying, or why he was saying such things, but when he saw the light in Jae Joong’s face brighten, he could not bring himself to say otherwise.

“Are you serious?” Jae Joong asked incredulously, though he could not hide the smile that tugged at the corner of his lips. Yun Ho nodded. “Then… then why weren’t you-“

“I was nervous,” Yun Ho blurted out once more; at least this time, he was telling the truth. “I mean, you’re so perfect… how can anybody say anything to you without stuffing things up?”

Jae Joong leaned forward and smiled. Yun Ho found himself smiling, too. “I’m glad, then. So far my life has been full of disappointments… you’re the first that’s ever gone right…” the ethereal man trailed off, flushing when he had realized what words slipped out of his mouth were words that were not meant to be shared on the first date, “I-I mean… sorry. I’m sorry. I said too much.”

“No,” Yun Ho shook his head, “they weren’t too much.”

A smile slowly crept up the corner of Jae Joong’s lips; erasing the worried expression that once inundated his face. “You haven’t touched your coffee.”

“Right.” Yun Ho chuckled, taking the cup into his hands. He took a moment to stare at the black liquid that swirled in his hands and thought that maybe he could be with Jae Joong, at least just for that day. He could think of Jae Joong as a friend and not put any malice into what they’d do. After that he would never again have anything to do with the other male. Contented, he brought the cup of coffee to his lips and watched as the smile on Jae Joong’s face never wavered.

~;~

After coffee, Jae Joong insisted they’d see a movie. He’d been dying to see Ghost Protocol ever since it had come out, and Yun Ho could not help but smile at how similar their tastes were in movies. Once they had finished they proceeded to dinner; which was followed by a leisurely walk in the park as they both bathed under the silver light of the moon. Their date was typical, and there wasn’t anything special to it - though deep down, Yun Ho felt that there in fact was something special about their time spent together.

“Today was nice.” Yun Ho admitted as he and Jae Joong walked side by side, aimlessly around the park. The place was hardly lit, but the little light that managed to cast upon Jae Joong, coupled with the silver rays of the moon, made the man look even more beautiful and ethereal than he already was.

“I think it was more than nice.” Jae Joong laughed, stopping in his tracks when he realized that Yun Ho had stopped, too. His smile slightly wavered and slowly, his eyebrows began to furrow, “Yun Ho… is anything the matter?”

Yun Ho bit his lip and looked away from Jae Joong momentarily. There was just something about seeing Jae Joong under the moonlight that made him feel sexually attracted to him all over again; it was like reliving the previous night. When he turned to face Jae Joong again, his eyes were closed; and only when he began to speak did they open, “I…” he began.

Jae Joong lifted his eyebrows, as though prompting him to go on. Yun Ho took that as a signal to continue.

“I was just wondering if you wanted to go back to my place.”

A soft smile tugged at Jae Joong’s lips, and he reached out to cup Yun Ho’s cheeks in his hands. “I honestly don’t want to say no to you.”

~;~

Yun Ho and Jae Joong stumbled through the door of Yun Ho’s apartment, desperate and all over each other. Neither of them had their shirts on anymore, and neither was able to keep track fully of what was happening; all they knew was that they were needy and hungry for each other.

Yun Ho’s lips found their way down to Jae Joong’s neck, and his hands already proceeded to grope Jae Joong’s ass; both squeezing and holding it for support as the beautiful man’s legs wrapped around his waist. Yun Ho carried him down the hall, bumping into lamps and almost skidding in the process. Once at the end of the hall, he fumbled with the doorknob before finally twisting it open. Jae Joong was thrown onto the bed right after.

“Fuck,” Yun Ho purred as he crawled onto the bed and over to Jae Joong. “Yun Ho… Yun…” Jae Joong whimpered before his lips collided with Yun Ho’s once again; the need for each other intensified by the second, and it wasn’t too long before Yun Ho eventually broke off, trailing hungry kisses down the other’s neck.

“Ngh… Yun Ho…” Jae Joong moaned when Yun Ho’s hands began to fondle with his clothed erection. “Off… take it off…” he managed to say, before hands were all over the button of his pants. Jae Joong let out a lewd gasp when he felt fingers wrap around his base.

And that gasp was just what stopped Yun Ho dead.

Realizing what was going on, Yun Ho let go and immediately pushed Jae Joong away from him; panic and guilt quickly washing over him. “Shit… I’m sorry. I lied.”

Jae Joong’s eyes turned to him in confusion, whining at their abrupt stop, “What are you talking about?” he reached out for Yun Ho, still needy from what they had just been doing, but was snapped back to his senses when the other pushed him away again and repeated what he had just said,

“I lied.” Yun Ho said, turning his face away from Jae Joong, “I lied to you. I’m not gay, and you were right. I did ask you out last night because I thought you were a woman. I… we can’t do this. I’m sorry.”

“What?” Jae Joong asked in disbelief. A cold and bitter sensation washed over him, and at that moment, he knew what it felt like to be betrayed. He stared at Yun Ho for a moment, hoping that the latter was just pulling a cruel, horrible joke on him, or anything to prove to him that what was happening wasn’t really reality; but when Yun Ho remained quiet, he felt tears beginning to form in his eyes.

“My life isn’t meant for anything else but disappointments.” Jae Joong muttered, fighting a losing battle against tears. He should have known. He should have known that when something is too god to be true; it probably is. Hurriedly, he got off Yun Ho’s bed and proceeded to button up his pants. He did not even spare Yun Ho a glance, and headed straight for the door; only to be stopped by other man.

“I didn’t want to be like the others.” Yun Ho admitted, holding onto Jae Joong’s arm. The smaller of the two pulled away from Yun Ho’s grasp and turned to face him; tears already streaming down his face, and eyes filled with nothing but hurt and contempt.

“Don’t worry, Yun Ho, you’re not like them.” He uttered bitterly and coldly through tears, “You’re worse. I gave you the chance to leave, but you stayed and led me on.”

“I didn’t mean-“

“Don’t even bother.” Jae Joong told him before leading himself out of Yun Ho’s room, and out of his apartment. When Yun Ho heard a loud bang come from outside his room, he fell down onto his knees and buried his face in his hands.

“Shit. What have I done?” he groaned, forcing the image of a hurt Jae Joong out of his mind; to no avail, “What makes him so different from anybody else? I hate his kind. I should be happy… I got what I wanted.” Yun Ho slowly stood up from his position and dropped himself on the bed, repeating to himself over and over that he should be happy that he got what he wanted; that Jae Joong was out of his life, and that there was no more need to see him again. He got what he wanted.

Was that truly what he wanted, though?
