Happy Fourth of July to all of you.
We went to a parade this morning and then for ice cream (yum!). I'm cooking hot dogs for dinner tonight (not hamburgers, 'cause two out of three of us don't like them that much) and then we're going to a fireworks show here in town. Then we have sparklers that we won as a prize for the 'most unique' for bringing back four pieces of birthday cake when we played 'Bigger or Better'. :-) It should be a fun day - it has been so far. It's nice and toasty here, but it could be a lot hotter.
I was going to put something patriotic and inspiring up here, but it's hard to be that when you're not sure which country you really belong to. I guess if I could put it in one word, it would be: respect. I might not agree with some of the things America does and or some of the ways Americans live, but I can still respect the flag, the anthem, and the soldiers, sailors, and airmen that have given their lives - whether that be in years of service, or in death. Papua New Guinea isn't a perfect country by any means, there is so much wrong with their political system and their management of natural resources. But I can still respect the flag, the anthem, and the ideals they hold dear. I might have spent as much time in PNG as here and sometimes wonder if I agree with my passport when it says I'm from here, but that doesn't mean I can't respect both countries. I have friends and family in the American armed services and, though I think war is wrong, I do appreciate what they are doing for our freedom and that of people around the world.
I hope you're all able to have a wonderful day, whatever that includes for you.
