The Australian music industry is mourning the death of Billy Thorpe.
The rock legend was rushed to Sydney's St Vincent's hospital early this morning, after suffering chest pains.

Hospital spokesman David Faktor confirmed the 60-year-old Thorpe had died.

"I understand he had a heart attack, and the emergency staff were unable to resuscitate him," Mr Faktor said.

Thorpe's music career spanned five decades.

He was regarded as a pioneer of Australian rock and commentator Donnie Sutherland was among the first to pay tribute.

"What he did was, he forged at that time the one musical genre that we probably hold dearest to us - because it truly is ours - and that is Australian pub rock," Sutherland said.

Radio DJ Jonathan Coleman told Sunrise he received the news by phone early this morning.

"It's a very sad way to wake up and, you know, someone whose music that we listen to nearly every day on the radio," Coleman said.

"Most people I know think that I'm crazy, I probably play that at least once, maybe twice a week on the radio."

Billy Thorpe's family were by his side when he passed away.

REST IN PEACE, BILLY.
