he's back.
"Thank you, to all of our fans and--"
He's interrupted by a large hand on his shoulder, and Joonmyun turns his head a little to see who's trying to get his attention while he's trying (and failing) to make a coherent encore speech.
He sees a flash of blonde hair well above his eye level and he's about to turn back to the camera when he realizes that the blonde hair was Yifan's and that mean Yifan was back.
He's back.
Joonmyun shoves the trophy to anyone who'll take it and turns to fully hug the giant waiting for him.
It looks unprofessional and he knows that the fangirls are screaming and thrashing around and there'll be so much speculation about their relationship after this, but he's beyond caring when he sniffs Yifan's familiar cologne and buries his head deeper into the crook of his neck.
"Uh, he meant to say thank you," Kris, the co-leader, says in every language he knows. He's giggling a little too, and past the façade of Kris and Suho, the two men hugging on stage can see Yifan and Joonmyun, both of them too happy to care about what others would say.
"I missed you," Joonmyun whispers in his ear. He's tiptoeing until he's toes are white and tired, and Yifan keeps an arm around his shoulder to keep him steady.
To others, this was just fanservice, the touching reunion of the leaders of the two halves of EXO.
To them, this was the touching reunion of the two halves of a whole.

family!AU. "But he wouldn't want this for you. He wouldn't want this for us."
He clenches his fist again and shuts his eyes close. The shiver of their memories crawls up his arm and he shakes it away, begging the warmth in his eyes to go away for a little longer, just until his husband leaves the room.
Yifan opens his eyes and Joonmyun is still cleaning the living room, hands moving automatically to make sure that everything is at its right place. Joonmyun is emotionless and stoic, much stronger than he was thought to be, much stronger than Yifan. He acts like it's an ordinary day, except that they won't have any reason to leave the house every afternoon.
"Stop moping. Please."
Joonmyun's voice is cracking with disuse. Yifan knows that if he tries to speak, his voice will be cracking not just because of prolonged silence, but also because of the unshed tears he's been holding back for too long. Yifan looks down and avoids his husband's gaze.
"Don't you think it's hard for me too? I know you've lost a son, but so have I!" Joonmyun's outburst startles him and he looks up immediately. The glassy eyes that greet Yifan mirrors his and they look away to stop it all from breaking apart.
Joonmyun's hands are jittery, and the preciseness Yifan saw was replaced by a desperation for familiarity, for memories and a past that they couldn't get back. He's trying so hard to bring back the times of long ago, and it's so futile that Yifan almost wants to hold his hands and stop him from making it feel worse than it already was. Yifan knows he's not any different. They try not to force themselves to talk about it, but there were these moments when there was just nothing they could hide behind and it was all they had left; the grief and the loss.
"Tao, he just…" His name was so painful to say out loud. It stayed as one of their permanent thoughts, the name of the little boy who they loved so much. It was the name of the little boy who loved them so much, who would smile at them whenever they appeared past the glass of his hospital room door, who would talk to them about the kind nurses who would talk to him and read him stories and let him watch cartoons every morning. Tao, their most beloved son.
Joonmyun dropped the curtains he was supposed to hang. "I-it's so hard. But he wouldn't want this for you. He wouldn't want this for us."
He stutters a little before his voice comes back and he can talk without feeling the need to collapse and cry again. "He'd want us to go on a vacation. He'd want us to smile and laugh always and take pictures and videos of where we go, so that when we go back to him, we can show him everywhere we went."
"And it would make him feel like he was there with us too." Yifan's voice is lower than before. He could remember the first time Tao told them about his dream to travel, once his sickness goes away and the tubes are removed from his body and he can live a normal life again.
Joonmyun cried in front of the little boy for the first time in his life.
"Daddy, are you alright?" His voice rings in their ears again and again, and the thought of never being able to hear that voice again makes the tears freely fall from Joonmyun's eyes.
"Daddy, nurse Joohyun gave me some papers and crayons today. Look at what I drew!"
"Papa, this nice man and his friends sang for me and gave me balloons that said 'get well soon.' Isn't that so nice?"
"I'm so excited to leave this place and go home with you again. Have you been feeding Sehun? I want to come home and see a fluffy fat dog, okay?"
"Papa, it hurts so much. The doctor told me to sleep but I still felt it while I was dreaming. I dreamed of you and me and daddy going to all these different places in a flying car. It looked like this, papa. Look at my drawing here! Don't you want to go on that flying car with me and daddy?"
The bark from in front of him scares Yifan out of his reverie. He picks Sehun up and pats him on the head. "Have we fed him yet?"
Joonmyun wipes the tears away from his eyes. "No. I'll get the food."
Sehun curls up on Yifan's lap. He's brought back to the day when they bought him from the pet shop, the day Tao first fell in love.
"He's so cute." Tao kept on saying as he played with the toys of the then-puppy dog shyly hiding in its cage. Joonmyun held his son's hand and smiled widely.
"As long as you feed him and wash him and take very good care of him, he'll be your very best friend forever. What are you going to name him?"
Tao spent an entire week calling it "the thing" until he finally decided to name him Sehun after the dog that Yifan had when he was a little boy too. Yifan grinned at his little boy so widely that his cheeks had hurt afterwards.
Sehun whines when Yifan hugs him too tightly. He abruptly lets go and allows the little dog to run to his dish of food. Tao wasn't able to see him after he got admitted to the hospital permanently. When Yifan was a child, Sehun died on his best friend.
This time, the best friend died on his dog.
"Don't. Just stop. I'm tired of always being miserable, Yifan." Joonmyun places his hand on Yifan's shoulder and sits down beside him, resting his head on his torso. Yifan slides his arm around his shoulder, pulling him closer. "Tao would want us to be happy."
"He wouldn't want us to be like this. He would want us to live the way we would if he was still here."
"We should go on a vacation," Yifan whispers. "It doesn't matter where; let's just get out of here."
"Let's take lots of pictures. And when we get home, let's show him everywhere we went to."
"And he'll feel like he was with us."
"And he'll always be with us."
They smile at each other. There are tear tracks on their cheeks and they're still crying a little.
They smile, and they know Tao's smiling down on them from up there as well.
