Mostly they get stolen by Heartless. These guys... I didn't ever figure out how they did it, but they chose to do it themselves from what I can tell.

Yeah, the Heartless. They're born from the darkness in people's hearts, and they want one of their own, but they can't keep one. So they go after people to steal their hearts, and stealing a heart makes another heartless, but they can't keep the hearts they're stealing. There's none here in Luceti.
