Yes, I got something of a summer job again. And, again, this is mostly for my own records. I'm aware that no one much cares for nor follows this. XD It's like a diary, right? And it gives me a place to vent, and then come back to later to see where I came from.
Anyway, that odd tangent aside, I'm working this summer not at the mill, but at Teaopia here in Vancouver. Well...in Surrey. It's not bad; the location is actually in the mall which is attached to my school, so it's hardly out of my way. I got the job because I go to school there. Every day I had class, I'd swing down to get tea -- because I was giving up coffee -- and after a while the manager just asked me to drop my resume off with her just in case. Two weeks later, I get a call for an interview. Two weeks after that I get a call for an 'audition' (which entailed essentially a practice shift with people playing difficult customers to test me). Once that was done, they hired me, and I've now been working for two weeks. Admittedly, it's only part time, but so far I feel like I'm doing pretty well. Maybe, if I keep on, I'll eventually find myself with full time employment.
The job itself is great. The people are fantastic to work with, the atmosphere is wonderful, and I get as much tea as I want to drink, as staff gets an 80% discount on drinks. So I am rather steadily satisfied. Admittedly, some people are kind of tricky to deal with, and I'm still getting the hang of being a salesperson, but I'm catching on quickly, I'm learning how to smile and be friendly, and I'm learning how to encourage people to buy a little more than they might have originally intended.
Overall, I'm pretty happy. I'm taking a couple of courses as well this summer, so it's actually best that I'm not working 40 hours a week. It's not as much money as I would like, but...I'll survive. If everything plays out well, I may even survive comfortably. Aside from that, though, my updates to this will now be coming from a much less dangerous but no less interesting workplace. Examples of things that might come up include:
- Weird old guys hitting on me and other staff members
- Discussions with the adorable young man who works two stores down
- Customers commenting on the fact that I'm Japanese
- General comments/updates about my greatness
