He felt his fingers slipping, and felt life slipping out his fingers. He cursed Kolya yet again for robbing him of not only his hand, but of his life and his family…His fingers slipped just a bit more, and he let go, falling, falling away, down the abyss….
John bolted awake, sweaty hands, both of them, gripping the sheets. He rubbed his forehead, thinking over the events of last week. First there had been revulsion that he could conjure up such punishments, then there had been denial, and now there were the nightmares, where he let go, or lost both hands, or the ones that terrified him the most, the ones where he broke and gave in, giving away Atlantis’s gate code. Sometimes Kolya was replaced by John himself, and in others, it was he who was torturing his own teams. He hated nightmares. He preferred dreams where it was just him and his team, or one member of his team in particular. He slumped back in his bed. He didn’t know which was worse, waking up from one of these nightmares, or discovering that she wasn’t beside him. But he knew that when he dreamed, he would sleep again that night. But when the nightmare came, there would be no more sleep for him. Still, he settled back into the bed, laying his head against the pillow and closing his eyes. But he slept, and in that sleep, he dreamt a dream…
