It's super sad that I'm rewarding myself with RP for my work.
SOPHIE is his wife, and that's pretty new! He's not used to having a family, but he's secretly really happy because yeah, some of his Kings and Queens didn't exactly have a happy family relationship, but he adores taking care of children, and that's what all the townsfolk are to him. Unfortunately, he sees Sophie in this way a bit--not as much an equal as a child, and he needs to take care of her. And since he's pretty stubborn, his views haven't exactly changed. Except Sophie is starting to give off serious America vibrations with the "I'm talking to closets to go awaaaaay", and he's freaking out and going a bit mad about it. Not just angry, but just not in the right state of mind anymore, and he wants Sophie to stay with him, even if it means she's unhappy. He seriously adores her, but he just doesn't know when to let go. But after the whole milkman incident, when he tried to actually kill her, he's become disturbed with himself and afraid of what he might do. He thinks that the only way to save their relationship, which is really what he wants, is to watch from afar. He's not letting Sophie go running into danger anytime soon, but he's pretty conflicted in seeing himself as a danger.
Of course, with the whole Howl's arrival thing, his iron grip is trying to cling onto her even more, but he's just slowly unraveling because yeah, he's the British Empire, but all his colonies are leaving him, and Sophie can't leave, Sophie can't leave, Sophie can't leave. He's not actually mad about her real husband being her real husband, since he doesn't exactly have romantic intentions. But it's more like someone is taking his child away, and he can't have that. His actions are just growing increasingly inconsistent with his ideals. He's not trying to make her angry when he's telling her that she's wrong and he's right, he's just trying to get her to recognize that she should stay with him, and the taxes are really for your benefit for the French and Indian War and stop dumping his tea into the harbor and just stay with him. BUT other than his creepy neediness, he respects Sophie as a person, too, though less when he sees her as a child throwing a temper tantrum. But he recognized her enough to ask her to come with him to vote, and he sees her magic as something that can be helpful. Trust her, yeah, but to put into her danger, no. Sophie's status is just a notch higher than a child, but he really cares about her and is deeply hurt by what she says, even though lol it's really his fault. But he trusts her to take care of Tiffany, and herself, and that she's a good person with a sensible mind and if he ever stops being so erratic, then he'll listen to her and actually take her advice.
