The Villain Academy: Prologue

Nov 29, 2009 22:06

Hi, everyone!

As promised, I will begin to post chapters of my winning NaNo, "The Villain Academy"! Before I get sent to bed, here's the prologue to my novel. Enjoy!

Prologue

The world needs heroes, but only because there are villains.

For, you see, there is no need for a hero to fix the problem unless a villain causes the problem. Therefore, being a villain is a whole lot harder than being a hero. As a villain, you must always be a step ahead of a hero. You need to be able to hold entire cities hostage. You need to build doomsday machines, such as super-powered lasers and destructive robots, and you need to prepare a smug evil monologue for when you have the hero trapped.

Being a villain is no walk in the park. Villains can’t even walk in parks; it would completely destroy their reputations. Would you take a villain seriously if they went around smelling the roses? No. As a villain, you need to be setting the flowers on fire and cackling evilly. Which brings up another villain requirement: an evil laugh. Those are hard.

A villain must either be a super genius or some sort of outcast with superpowers, with an attitude of hate towards the entire world and an unimaginably dark past. So, naturally, there is a school where one learns how to be a villain.

This school, the Villain Academy, is hidden deep within a forest in a place where it is rainy near all the time. Villains can’t go around in broad daylight, after all. The Villain Academy’s rainy, cold atmosphere allows for a constant backdrop to evil plotting. The building itself is architecture gone bad, with tall, unsteady-looking turrets, small windows, and cold, stone walls. The school is a boarding school; it’s said being separated from one’s family instills the necessary hatred in a young villain.

The school accepts all grade levels; it’s like any normal boarding school, only evil. It’s co-ed, with dorms for boys and girls, and classes taught by the finest ex-villains looking for a more peaceful job for their golden years.

Heroes, unknowing that the Villain Academy is the only thing keeping them in business, have tried numerous times to attack and destroy the school, but have always failed. After all, it is a school of villains; the heroes always vastly underestimated the Academy.

But now, they’re sure they have the perfect plan to get rid of the Villain Academy once and for all.

Intriguing, yes? :D
