It's because of people like you that the world will become a better place. Thank you! It's important to stand up for *everyone's* rights, even if it's not "your" group. Because we are all human beings in this world, together.
People often will happily sign a petition supporting the civil rights of the disabled, or for religious freedom, even if they don't classify themselves as belonging to those groups. But when it comes to gay rights, many people assume only gay people should sign these petitions. (go figure!) Once when I was signing a petition in support for gay marriage, I had a colleague (well-educated) actually say to me, "I thought you were married!" (Meaning, "I didn't know you were gay!") What do you say to such stupidity? (I handled it with a bit of humour: "Gosh, I didn't know I had to be part of a group to support them! Does that mean I have to be part of a religious minority to support religious freedom?" He went back and signed the petition, haha)
