After all the stress on the ugliness of English weather - the place he feels good among all of it, and the reference to Wayne... *sigh*, because he makes him feel the way the pitch does...
... now that last remark sounded funny, sorry, but you wrote the ficlet so you know how I mean it.

And it's funny how your own surroundings inspire you because when I wrote this the weather was frightful and grey in Berlin. If we had a white winter with much sun I would probably never have wrote this. Funny to think about this...

It's is not exactly strange to see how the surroundings influence you, to my mind that's as it should be. I met a few writers who were solely writing from within, or at least that was their major inspiration, they took hardly anything from the world around and outside. Those were very heartwrenching and interesting stories, I admit, but to my mind when you've written a lot, you start going in circles, and you won't get nowhere this way.
I've turned much more to the idea of influence from EVERYWHERE, from every tiny thing, as it seems the most natural to do.
But, yes, the idea that that ficlet was not in existence if it wasn't for the weather in the right moment... it's funny :)

I think it would be good to combine the two. Filter outside stimuli through your own experiences or what not.
