On the craftgrrl community, someone posed questions to modern crafters that she is going to use in a paper of some sort. I thought I'd copy and paste my answers to my journal.

Why do you think crafting declined after the seventies?

Crafting died out in the seventies in large part to feminism, and home arts being seen as oppressive. Also, things were more readily available to buy ready-made, to save time and money for those women who were working and keeping a family.

Why do you think crafting and customizing is becoming so popular again?

I think crafting has come back into vogue largely due to feminism coming full circle. A woman can and should do whatever floats her boat, including home arts. It has also come from the green movement, with people making their own or revamping what they already have in an effort to reduce their consumption of natural resources. And, as many have said, it is a satisfying and relaxing past time to create something useful or beautiful.

How do you feel about famous people such as Kate Moss getting into knitting?

I don't mind famous people getting into crafts. It's flattering they want to be like us! :)

What is drawing young people to it?

In general, young people don't have incomes, and crafting is a cheap way to get new stuff. Also, if you make it yourself, no one else will have one just like it, so it's a way to declare individuality.

What do you personally like about crafting and what do you usually work with?

I usually make things for other people when I'm crafting. It's a really great way to meditate on what that person means in your life, as you are making something specifically designed for their enjoyment. Plus, I feel like my hobby is worthwhile when I am creating something tangible. I do lots of different crafts including scrapbooking, sewing, stenciling, jewelry making, paper crafts, knitting/crocheting, embroidery and others.
