This week I learned that rats can emit photons from their eyes, there can be an immortal person-time bias in surgery observations, and that a swimming style can have a colour if you're a synaesthete.

A friend of a friend is encouraging me to re-publish my thesis through some dodgy publisher in Mauritius (via a mass-sent FB spam message). SO MUCH DNW. She thinks it's cooler to have a book on your shelf than have actual papers published in internationally recognised, peer-reviewed journals. Except, of course, the book exists (I paid for it - it's in my uni's library), and the papers have a lot more validity. Peer-reviewed papers are OK-ed by other scientists (and my papers went through many rounds of fine-tuning), whereas books (especially those you originally publish yourself) aren't peer reviewed and can be a load of horse droppings... Furhtermore, I'd probably have to get permissions from 4-5 publishers before I could re-publish. And even then, my "book" will have zero reprint/resale value and will pretty much just be sitting on my shelf at home. I'm not THAT MUCH of an ego freak...

I ran 7.05 miles this morning (in 1h 12min). There's about a 40 second difference between my 5 mile pace and my 7 mile pace. I think I'll keep my mileage here for now. Next week's my second duathlon. Last time I got pretty good times, but this time I'm probably going to push a little less just so I can finish it comfortably. My left leg just KILLS when I put effort into my running.

I want to take a little break and think about my training for the London Duathlon - which scares me a bit. If I just complete that one I'll be really thrilled. Luckily the London Du is a mass event so I'll have a lot of company. Next week's duahtlon is a 50-70 person event... But my main goal will be to be able to do a brick session that is a direct copy of the distances, two week before the London Duathlon. It's got a few things going for it that next week's duathlon also doesn't: London Du is hilly, which gives me the advantage in cycling. I know most duathletes are NOT cyclists - they're runners who are up for a challenge. So I can apply years of cycling knowledge there. If I manage to keep my knee happy, and get my running mileage and speed up a bit, I should be fine.

I'm going to do some gardening now (including trying to keep the neighbourhood cats from pooping in my flower beds by planting sticks/stakes into it - the beds not the poop... nor the cats). I'm also drinking some of this:

(The wine itself is a deep dark ruby colour, with aromas of juicy blackcurrants billowing from the glass. There’s also a slight dusting of cocoa in there, which follows through on the palate. In contrast to the aromas, the flavours are more red fruit than black. Plums, redcurrants, squishy raspberries. There’s a gentle warming spiciness which would go down a treat with antipasti or a cheeseboard, though I prefer this fruit-driven wine to shine on its own. From here)
