Be a man.
One by one they tell him.
His father, when he is 12 and standing rigidly at his mother’s funeral as his expensive suit chafes him, slowly smothering any form of relief he might find.
Gibbs, after Kate’s death when he loses himself in guilt and grief and the black hole of unadulterated fury; the burning need for revenge that colours his emotions and casts the world in shades of grey much darker than he can deal with.
Ziva, when Jeanne returns to accuse him of her father’s murder. “Tell her what she needs to hear,” she instructs him.
They tell him to be a man.
He wonders when he ever had the chance to be a child.
