Tony hightails it out of Hammersmith’s Country Bar the first chance he gets, eager to leave behind ‘Debbie Sue’ and her well-built boyfriend behind. He has his cell phone out before the door has swung shut behind him.
“Sacco just left the bar…” he begins ratting off a report to Gibbs, stumbling over his words when the world starts to waver before his eyes. His head begins to pound as the colours start to blur.
“Uh…” he hesitates. Ginger-ale. He’s been drinking ginger-ale tonight.
Disregarding that point, he’s had enough practice drinking under high-stress undercover operations where non-alcoholic drinks are not an option; so that even if the bartender screwed up his drink, he should be fine.
“I’m not feeling so well.”
He can spot his car from here, and staggers towards that.
“Tony? Are you okay?”
“I think I screwed up, Boss.”
He falters in his step, uses the car to brace himself as he fumbles with his keys, trying to open the door - he’s in no shape to drive, but the car has locking doors and bulletproof glass. His instincts are screaming ‘danger, Will Robinson’ - gratuitous movie references and all - so he draws his weapon as he falls, hitting the ground as a dead weight.
The ground is a blessedly cool surface beneath his fingertips, and Gibbs’ voice in his ear is an anchoring presence.
“Hey, DiNozzo. Can you hear me?”
Yes, Boss.
There’s a new disconnect between his brain and his mouth, he realizes.
“Tony!” Gibbs yells, and he knows it’s bad when his Boss uses his first name.
“We’re coming for you.”
His initial thought is ‘oh, that’s nice,’ because he gets giddy when he’s drunk, even in inappropriate moments like these.
Then ‘I know’, because no matter how intoxicated he is, he believe Gibbs’ words.
