USA! USA!

I have a massive fondness for US-centric retro kitchen stuff: although I obviously have absolutely no ties whatsoever to the era or the country, for me, it creates a happy fantasy world of big skirted goddesses going about daily household chores with a smile. I love old fashioned cookbooks with bizarrely lurid illustrations of bright red glazed turkeys and beaming housewives, and I'm fascinated with American cooking in general - as evidenced by my yearly pursuit of the 'authentic' Thanksgiving meal.

Tonight, in honour of the humble, yet legendary, everyday, yet mysterious, American diner, I am preparing JoJo's Diner Special, which is a mixture of spinach, tomatoes, potatoes, egg, sausage and God knows what else. I also got through the post the frankly massive cookbook by Shelia Lukins, USA, which has been on my wishlist for far too long. Flicking through it looks like exactly the kind of thing I'm after. A while back it was a choice between this and 'It's All American Food', and I definitely made the wrong choice. Still, I'm over it now...

Dishes this week will consist of pastrami sandwiches, also in honour of the humble diner, and burgers and fries, in honour of (wait for it) Hamburgers and Fries: An American Story, by John T. Edge - which is a great book that I thoroughly enjoyed eating, but one which it's impossible to read without craving the subject matter.
