There was an art to slide tackling. For a slide tackle to be legal, it had to remove the ball from the other player. Taking someone out without the ball was worth a penalty. However, it was perfectly legal to remove the ball and "happen to" take the other player down. It was dirty soccer, but soccer wasn't a game for the weak.
Some teams were better than others. Midoriyama was notorious for its sneaky plays.
As he shook the other captain's hand, Mizuno stared at the other team, and sent up a silent prayer that his legs would last the game.
