shock and awe

I had a serious crisis of self-doubt and faith in humanity last night. An angry email from a client and a phone call from another old client left me feeling like I'm not a technician but a total hack. I've never felt so down about what I do before in my life. I spent most of the night crying and of course avoiding sobbing next to Paul, because ( Read more... )

Another way to look at this, Sweets, is that the mark of a newbie is someone who's never had to deal with what you had to deal with last night. The measure of your professional success could be more how you deal with these things when they happen (you can't please everyone no matter how wonderful you are) than it is how you keep them from ever happening (which is probably impossible).

You're good at what you do. You may have screwed up, or you may have done something not exactly the way the client wanted it done (and clients are notorious for expecting telepathy in that regard--we software folk deal with that all the time), or whatever. That doesn't make you not good at what you do. You don't know who might have defecated on those clients' circular oat-based breakfast cereal yesterday long before they got hold of you.

All the same, it SUCKS when that happens. I've had those days of self-doubt too, and they are NO FUN. I'm sad you've had one of those. I also trust that you'll get through it. And while it was good of you to consider Paul's sleep needs, I do hope you'll lean on him when you get a moment to do so. I bet he'll be good to lean on.

Lots o' lovin's as always!!!
