As you probably know by now, I am currently jobless and living with my parents. [I've applied to International Studies graduate programs and am waiting to hear back. Keep your fingers crossed. It is a big ass applicant pool out there.] Otherwise, I spend time volunteering with a German Shepherd rescue group and doing Bikram yoga--either way, I come home pretty gamey.
Recently, I was presented with a chance to do something a little more exciting. In fact, something really extraordinary.
I have the opportunity to travel to Haiti next month to help the country rebuild. I will be traveling with a group led by my Uncle Jay, an ER doctor in Lexington, Kentucky. He works with a group called Christian Flights International (CFI). Jay has been working with them for thirty-three years now. You can read more about them here:
http://www.christianflights.org/ Full Faith Disclosure: I am not now, nor have I ever been, down with Jesus. Uncle Jay, however, is a seriously Christian dude. As a very devout person and a good doctor, I know he believes in the purpose and effectiveness of this organization's mission to Haiti. And even though I don't believe in Jesus, I do trust my Uncle Jay.
I really want to go with him this time. I need $700 for in-country expenses. These include food, clean water, and transportation. CFI works in a village called Ranquitte, 100 miles from Port au Prince. From Port au Prince, we will travel by (very small one engine) plane to a town with a dirt runway to land on. Then another eleven miles overland to Ranquitte. There, we will build a safe and dry home and support CFI's other missions there. Our job may change, however, depending on how long we spend in Port au Prince. On Friday, I will start anti-malarial pills and on Monday I will get my typhoid vaccine. Right now, we are scheduled to be in Haiti during the second week of March. The flight info is somewhat in flux, however, since the Port au Prince airport isn't open for commercial flights yet. I'll keep you all updated!
I understand that I'm asking for money and this is the internetz and people are rightly skeptical. So here is a list of some wonderful LJ folks who have met me in real life, face to face, and can veryify my personhood. I have their permission to say that you may PM them and ask if I'm legit:

Crud. My layout seems to have eaten part of my itinerary, but the important stuff's there.
This is a once in a lifetime chance for me to really make myself useful in a place that needs a lot of help. But I need help to get there. Any amount donated, in whatever size, is very much appreciated. Also loved and appreciated: prayers, good vibes, and even more crossed fingers. (Note: this isn't tax deductible. I'm not a charity, just a charity case.) I promise to put every penny to good use by working my butt off while I'm there. And when I get back, I'll pictures and stories and some blogging, if I can swing it.
If you have any questions about the mission, I'll try to answer them. And if I can't, I'll pass them on to Uncle Jay. Thank you so much for your time!
with love,
July
ETA: WE'RE OVER THE TOP! I'M GOING TO HAITI!
