HOLY SHIT.

34% of Republicans polled believe that the birth control pill is abortion. 31% think contraceptives should be outlawed. 31% think that Barack Obama is a racist who hates White people and ONE THIRD OF REPUBLICANS ARE ON THE FENCE THERE.

This kind of makes me want to start hoarding food and water. And a teddy bear. I need something to hug. [ETA: ( Read more... )

Forgive me for commenting on politics, but I don't know what's more frightening about this poll: that so many people would vote for Palin as President, or that so many people think Obama should be impeached. Impeached for WHAT, exactly? For creating falsified intelligence reports and violating UN statutes in order to start a war on. . . oh, no, wait - wrong President!

I need to move to Canada.

Only if you bring supplies. Preferably, contraceptives. Because apparently almost a third of Republicans think they should be outlawed.

Glad I'm not the only one scared by those people! This is why I own guns. Course, they think guns are fine. They don't realize we'll fight back with them.

Ha! I hardly think it will come to that. Unless they come for my condoms. My condoms and my HBC, I will defend. And my teddy bear.

Like the conservatives did when the liberal socialists were selling us out to the Commies a few decades ago?

...sorry, centrist Republican here. I felt this deserved a bit of reciprocal snark. I'm tired of people assuming that because we disagree on some things (or even because a portion of one party or another has bought into a ridiculous idea or conspiracy theory), the Other Party is about to bring on the apocalypse.

Didn't happen then. Don't see it happening now.

Oh, no no no. I'm not scared of the Republican Party itself. I wasn't active a few decades ago, so I can't speak to what happened then. I'm not scared of a strong opposition party. Two strong parties make the country run best, IMO.

What concerns me about the poll is the percentages it represents. It scares me that a substantial portion of the Americans think Barack Obama is secretly from Kenya, secretly a socialist, and is a racist who hates white people. It scares me that so many people think birth control is the same as abortion. And that contraceptives need to be outlawed. That's what scares me.

Okay, just checking. :) I'm not used to LJ liberals (even my flist) being sane about these things, so.

I understand why people consider the morning-after pill to be similar to abortion, but as for the rest of it...yeah. As I said, I'm a centrist (which means I disagree with both the far right and most of the left *g*).

I try to be as sane as possible in all my dealings.

I honestly don't. The poll was referring to hormonal birth control, which is so far from abortion it boggles my mind. And Plan B is also completely different. It scares me that our sex education which, for the last decade, has been pushed as abstinence only, has done such a shitty job of actual sex education. And the anti-choice movement has become so extreme that they're not just attacking abortion, they're attacking all the reproductive choices that prevent unwanted pregnancy.

As I said, I'm a centrist (which means I disagree with both the far right and most of the left *g*).

Dude...your party needs you. The world needs centrist Republicans right now.
