First Childbirth Class

Jun 17, 2011 21:03

We went to our first birth class this evening, taught by the student midwife at our birthing center. The class actually started last week, but we missed it due to miscommunication about the first class. Anyway, tonight focused primarily on the phases of labor, and positions to move baby down, and ways for Dad to support us during labor. We watched a couple of birth videos, and practiced breathing and counterpressure and that sort of stuff. It was very informative, and it totally got me excited for labor to start. Oh, and just as an FYI, we learned tonight that that sharp, stabby pain you get in your cervix that feels like baby is trying to punch their way out? Apparently it’s an indication of cervical change, you know, dilation and effacement. Definitely good to know that my body is already making progress. I’ve been feeling that for around 3 weeks now.

There were five couples there, us included. I kind of thought I’d be the farthest along, but I’m right in the middle. We range anywhere from 31 to 38 weeks, and we’re all first time parents. Pretty cool. The 38 weeker was having contractions while we were there, but I don’t know if they were labor contractions or just annoying BH. There are two more classes, next week and then on July 1.

So yeah, definitely a good experience, and just the encouragement I needed after yesterday’s appointment.
