So he had been hurt again. Big deal. Soldiers around the world (the galaxy, come to think of it) got hurt every minute of every day. He was no exception. He’d probably lost count of his injuries by now. It was the risk of the job he’d signed up for years ago. Nothing special.
“Carter! What’s taking so long in there?”
She stood in front of the open fridge, trying to find the beer for him. Mostly all he had in the house was beer, but that didn’t change the fact that she couldn’t see it. She wiped her hands over her face. They came back dry, which was nothing new. But they were shaking so hard that she was surprised she couldn’t actually hear the bones chatter.
“Carter? You still alive?”
Finally, she grabbed a cold one, shut the refrigerator door, and turned around.
Breathe.
She walked out of the kitchen and down the few steps into his living room to where he sat on the couch. His leg was propped up on a chair with some pillows, the cast shiny white except for the deformed Homer Simpson face he was currently drawing on it with a sharpie.
When he heard her coming he stopped, pointed to his artwork and grinned. “Ta da!”
She gave him her customary indulgent smile/eye roll that always seemed to make him happy. Today was no different. He grinned, satisfied with her answer. All was well.
So he had been hurt again. Big deal…
She handed him his beer.
“None for you? What’s up, Carter? Are you leaving me already? You just got here.”
He was joking, of course. Because that’s what they did.
So he had been hurt again. Nothing special. And this time he hadn’t been shot by alien warriors, some lunatic on another planet hadn’t beaten him up, hell; he hadn’t even been tortured into near submission by an evil System Lord.
“I was gonna watch that show that Teal’c’s been raving about…”
This time, he’d had a car accident.
“He says it’s quite good. I think it’s sci-fi or something, but what else is new with the big guy, right…?”
A car accident, right here in Colorado Springs, on his way home from work. A drunk driver had run a light and crashed into the Colonel’s truck. When she got the call from the hospital…
“Hey, you know me and sci-fi. But I’ll understand at least half of it if you stay and explain some of it…”
It was just a broken leg.
“You don’t have to, of course. I’m sure you’re busy…”
It was just a broken leg.
“But come to think of it, you really shouldn’t be busy since SG-1’s on downtime because of me, so what do you say?”
It was just…
“I love you.”
His face could have been comical, had this not been one of the most serious moments in her life. She slowly lowered herself to sit next to him. His drawing hand had abruptly dropped the sharpie on the floor.
“I just wanted you to know that.”
She could read the myriad of emotions that flashed across his face. Surprise, disbelief, hope, relief, joy…
He looked at her shaking hands.
…and understanding.
“Ok.” He reached for her hands. Pulled her body closer to his until she lay curled against his side. Brushed her bangs from her eyes and lowered her head to his shoulder.
So he had been hurt again. But this time, it had been the biggest deal of all.
“And…Carter?”
She moved her gaze up until she met his twinkling eyes.
“Ditto.”
She smiled at him, her hands in his, finally still.
