So, as I reflect on how I spent 3 of the last 4 days grading papers, I am also reflecting on those papers; there content; and how they were written. I remembered today why I liked reading the gen ed first paper so much. Those kids have fun telling the most random, creative (or banal) stories ever. Sometimes I sit there and think, "this is how you want to introduce yourself to your classmates?" other timers, "This is how you want to introduce yourself to your classmates!"
A subtle, yet nuanced difference.
Another thought occurred as I considered my student writers.
It isn't that depressed people write better than people who aren't depressed. It is simply that those who are depressed and write well tend to write about being depressed very well.
Because, yes, the best written essay of the lot was about being depressed. But damn, it was well written.
Peace out.
