Work has been I.N.S.A.N.E.
But I'm happy. We have almost doubled our business in one year, and the store has been in operation for almost 10. That's fantastic. People are waking up to their environment and taking steps in the right direction.
I had a boy in the store today. He was about 8, I asked him if he wanted a bag to carry his new notebook in. He gave me a funny look and said. " If you're an environmentally friendly store, why do you have plastic bags!" I smiled so big, the kid must have thought I was insane. " Well, we use old plastic bags that people donate to us so we don't have to make more bags" I said to him. " But that was an awesome question!" That kid is my hope for the future. He also told me he wanted to start a vermicomposter because worms are better at recycling.
I applaud either that boys school, or parent! Thats fantastic.
I keep taking giant leaps in my lifestyle to try and make the smallest environmental impact I can. Biking is going to start getting cold again damn it. But I intend to hold out until the snow not only flys, but covers. Then I'll take transit again. The lastest, greatest and hardest of these changes Em and I have decided to do is the "100 mile diet". Although, we've both decided that we want to support the organic farmers back home, so we've made the personal boundary of a 2 hours drive in each direction.
It's hard but the fresh heirloom cantaloupe and honey dew melons at the markets have made my banana and pineapple cravings disappear. Seriously folks...You have not tasted a melon, unless you have had an organic, local, heirloom cantaloupe. Holy of holiest.
We have had many meals now solely composed of local fare. It is an overwhelmingly satisfying feeling to know that my dinner is actually HELPING the planet.
I highly suggest anyone read the books-

They are great. They will change the way you think about food.
