It was over.

They had stopped the end of the universe and all was as it should be and would always be. Well almost. There was a price to be paid for winning the battle, but then again there always was in battles and wars.

But what an exquisite cost there was this time.

Amy Pond, the girl who waited, was now the girl that never was.

All because the Doctor himself had convinced the little girl this current incarnation first met to step into the Pandorica’s crack, and cease to exist.

He looked out the door of the TARDIS and saw Rory Williams, alive, whole, and decidedly not plastic at the top of a hill. The young man no longer had any memories of their brief travels together. No longer remembered growing up with a young Scottish lass, no longer remembered playing ‘raggedy Doctor’ with her. Would never remember asking her to marry him.

This was not one of the Doctor’s better ideas, for it could already make a difficult situation worse. However, this was not for his benefit.

It was for hers.

Looking at his companion, he saw the unshed tears her eyes, leftover from crying hours earlier when he had told her the truth of what had happened.

“What will happen to him?” a Scottish voice said softly, tinged with grief and pain; the first words either of them have said in hours.

“Oh, I-” The Doctor started, then stopped when he saw the expression on her face. He swallowed and spoke truthfully. “He’ll find a girl and marry. London girl, actually. They’ll have children and grandchildren. Great - grandchildren even. He’ll finally become one of the most beloved doctors in Leadworth.”

“He’ll have a good life, Amy.”

Amy Pond nodded, tiny saltwater tracks making their way down her pale cheeks. She continued to stare at the man she would have married and now would never know her.

“Why am I still here Doctor? I mean, I thought when my younger self went into the crack, that I - ?”

“I don’t know,” the Doctor replied as honestly as he could. Truth be told, he could not come up with an explanation for how the Amy that was standing beside him survived while everything she was had been effectively erased. Yes, he had known he would remember her, but he knows that should not have been enough to keep her physically in existence when everything else about her was gone. All he did know was that now, because of him, Amy was as alone and cut off as he was.

“Come along, Pond,” he said, gathering Amy up and into the TARDIS.

Across the way on a small hill, Rory Williams paused, as a weird grinding sound pierced the air.

He never heard it again.
