It’s never all or nothing with Jack Harkness.
Ianto Jones has always been aware of those facts. In fact he knows better than to demand that of Jack. If the recent encounter with Captain John Hart taught Ianto anything, it was that. Jack would always be many, many things, but completely committed to just one person, was not nor would it ever be Jack.
Unless, that person was Torchwood’s number one enemy: The Doctor.
It felt strange for Ianto to know that. To know that at any moment there was the possibility that there would be some end of the world crisis involving the Doctor; the man that Ianto had been trained to believe was the enemy from the moment Ianto had started working for Torchwood. To know that in that event, that Jack would more than likely drop everything, including the team he had helped to mold in Cardiff, to be at the Time Lord’s side. It hurt to know that Jack had already done so once without telling them, and quite possibly would do so again without a second’s thought.
Despite Jack’s protestations to the contrary, Ianto knows full well, that if it came down with it, Jack would go to the Doctor without a second’s thought.
The Welshman still did not now how to feel about that. On the one hand, Ianto was still angry with Jack for abandoning them two months prior to go with the Doctor. On the other, if it weren’t for the Doctor, they would have all very likely have been killed by the Cybermen and the Daleks. There was also something about the Doctor that for some reason, made Jack happy. As much as the thought upset him, Ianto had decided when he embarked on this relationship that he would not stand in the way of whatever would make Jack happy.
Even if it meant Ianto ended up alone again.
For now though, Ianto tried to push all thoughts of the Doctor out of his mind and enjoy the moments he had with Jack. Enjoy the feel of Jack molded around him in Ianto’s bed as the first rays of sunshine crept through the window. Enjoy the little moments stolen at work and little moments that were displayed out in the open for all the world to see. Ianto would enjoy the smile Jack would have on his face just before making a suggestion that would usually end up in bed and sometimes not even making it to the bed.
But it would not stop Ianto from fearing the next time an world wide alien invasion happened, and Jack possibly left again for a being that held more of Jack’s soul than Ianto would ever hope to have.
