Prologue: A Contract ChapterOne: Digusted with Myself There was a reason Rose chose this particular flat.
It allowed her clear access to the stars. There were none of the usual London lights, or zeppelins up in sky to block her view; just a whole blanket of stars stretching out before her. Stars long since denied to her. Despite the fact that they were not the stars she had once traveled, she still reached for them sometimes, if only in her mind. At first watching the stars brought nothing but pain; a reminder of all that she had lost by being thrown into this world, eventually they came to be friends. It was as if they brought reassurance to her that somewhere some when, he was still out there.
Rose needed the comfort of those stars would bring on this night; however brief that comfort might be.
Rose sighed heavily as she opened the door to her flat that evening. It seemed lately, she always walked in there in a bad mood. Such was the perks of working for Torchwood she supposed. Perhaps she should have known, when she walked into Pete’s office two weeks earlier that she would not like what he was about to ask her to do.
“Rose, we’re going to need you to do some undercover work for us.”
Rose closed her eyes against the memory of that day. She loved this universe’s version of Peter Tyler; perhaps about as much as she knew she loved her own father, as little time as she’d had with him. However, before she and her mum had come Pete had never had a family. Just a society wife version of her mum, who had no interested in having children, and a very successful soft drink company. He was used to people following orders without question. He had no idea how bad Rose would take just the thought of ‘using’ the Dollhouse’s services.
She argued hard against it. Rose just simply felt there had to be a better way of going about getting what they needed to know about how these ‘Actives’ behaved on their assignments without Rose stooping to their level to get it. What little they knew about the whole Dollhouse business came from rumor and their anonymous informant who supplied them with some pictures of the LA Dollhouse and information about the other nineteen houses. Scant other information came from notes that survived the burned out remains of the late Paul Ballard’s apartment building; sent by their mysterious informant. Apparently some of Ballard’s information seemed to indicate that some high ranking people in various governments and government agencies were, if not clients of the Dollhouse, at least involved in making sure the Dollhouse covered its tracks.
With that scant information to go on, Torchwood went about investigating the Dollhouse on its own. The first step was to send Mickey undercover as a handler or bodyguard for an active. Because Torchwood in this universe was much more well - known, Mickey had to very publicly denounce Torchwood and the Tyler family as Pete’s name was very well tied to the organization. Rose knew how badly that hurt Mickey to say hurtful words he really did not mean, and effectively cut himself off from everything he knew in this world. Rose could sympathize on a number of levels.
Now Rose was going to have to play her part. She was going to have to meet this brainwashed person; who had no idea what he was doing and she was going to have to smile and laugh the whole time she was with him. She was going to have to pretend the very concept was not disgusting to her; that this was no major deal. That she was quite capable of hiring a ‘date’ in this manner all the time. She was going to be in Hell the whole night.
She wasn’t sure who she felt sorrier for: Herself or this unknown person who was going to have no idea that the very thought of being near him was going to make her skin crawl.
Sighing she decided to check her messages before she headed for her bath. As she expected there were several messages: A few from other Torchwood employees, friends she worked with; one from Pete, asking her to come and debrief him in the morning, again apologizing for putting her in this situation. One was from her mother which she replayed a couple of times:
“Rose. It’s Mum. I just wanted to know if you were okay sweetheart. Oh the nerve of your father putting you up to this. I swear that man’s going to be walking funny and taking cold showers for a month when I’m through with him. The very nerve of him! Call me back when you get this. Love you, bye!”
Other than the part about cold showers (which Rose had definitely not wanted to hear as it implied certain things that a child should never imagine about one’s parents), her mum’s message brought a smile to her face. Rose never had any doubt what Jackie Tyler’s reaction would be to Rose’s undercover assignment. Rose was pretty sure that the only reason Jackie knew about it was that Pete knew very well that he could never keep anything from Jackie. That was just the way her Mum was. A put on airs Vitex wife this Jackie Tyler certainly was not.
Of course the next message wiped the smile from Rose’s face instantly:
“Ms. Tyler, this is Adelle DeWitt with the Dollhouse. I’m contacting you personally to confirm that your Active will be ready for you the night of your engagement. Further details will be sent to you when you arrive in Los Angeles. We hope that this is the beginning of a wonderful business arrangement for both parties. Enjoy the rest of your evening, good bye.”
With a sigh, she decided to bypass the bath; she could take a nice long, scalding shower in a little while.
Right now, she desperately needed her stars.
Going out onto her balcony, she gazed up and looked at the stars. Though different, they seemingly looked the same as the ones she had gazed out in her own universe. They looked like they never changed; that they always stayed the same, though Rose knew from traveling with the Doctor that just was not true.
Everything changed. Even her.
She wondered where the Doctor was right now. Was he near a star like the ones she had in their old universe? Was he on Earth, saving it from the various aliens that seemed to like to try and destroy it? Did he ever think of her after their final good bye on that beach? Or was she in the back recesses of his long memory like Sarah Jane had been?
If he did still think of her, would he still think she was the best, if he knew what she was about to do?
Closing her eyes against the stars, she slid down the brick wall of her balcony. Putting her knees to her chest and circling her arms around them, she finally gave into the tears that had been threatening to spill over all day.
“I wish you were here Doctor,” She whispers softly as she cries.
