Prologue Rose Tyler was walking down the hallway towards her office. It was two hours after her meeting with Adelle DeWitt and she still felt like she desperately needed a long hot, scorching shower to burn the dirt and shame she felt over what she had just done.
‘I’m nothing more than an accessory to human trafficking.’
That was what she had thrown out at Peter Tyler when he first broached the subject of this aspect of their investigation. Practically pleaded with the man both was and was not her father, not to have her go through with this. That there were other avenues for Torchwood to investigate this Dollhouse organization, and its suspicious mind - wiping technology. She pointed out that they already had Mickey Smith undercover as a handler and an unknown somebody feeding them information.
Unfortunately, the words fell on deaf ears.
Pete made his own points: He pointed out that they needed to see an Doll or Active as they apparently called brainwashed ‘employees’ in action to see how the ‘imprinting’ worked in a real world setting. Simply having Mickey there as a baby - sitter to these people in their child - like states was apparently not going to be enough. Rose in her role as Pete’s long - lost daughter and Vitex heiress, (as well as young and single though Pete had enough class not to add that unlike some colleagues) was the only one among Torchwood’s personnel that could realistically request and get close to a Doll in their Active state. The fact that she already had a reputation as a date ‘em once, then dump ‘em type a gal that sort of rivaled Paris Hilton in Rose’s own universe (though unlike Hilton she never slept with any of them) would make it easy for Adelle DeWitt to believe that Rose was willing to hire out for a date.
In the end, she caved.
She still felt like she was akin to some prostitute’s john.
Sighing, she ran a hand through her hair as she approached her office. She wore it down that day for her meeting with DeWitt, now past her shoulders again as it had been when she first started traveling with the Doctor all those years ago. Still blonde, it was somewhat curled that day, with small clips on each side. Just as she was about to place her hand on the doorknob, Jake Simmonds voice called out to her.
“Rose, how did the meeting go?”
“Fine,” Rose said in clipped tones. “If agreeing to participate in human trafficking counts as a meeting going well.”
“Rose -“ Jake started.
“I don’t want to hear it Jake,” Rose cut him off. “I already had this conversation with Pete many times over. I’m just going to have to go through with this the best I can.”
“Yeah, well Mickey isn’t exactly having peaches and cream over in Los Angeles, Rose,” Jake pointed out. “He has to pretend this sort of stuff is okay too.”
“At least Mickey can actually protect somebody, even if it’s simply when something goes wrong in their eyes ,” Rose pointed out icily. “He probably didn’t have to suddenly pretend like Adelle DeWitt was her newest best friend.”
Rose sighed, leaning heavily against the door to her office. She really did not want to hash out this conversation again, but it seemed like she had been having it every single day since the topic of her going undercover was first broached. She was quite frankly, getting sick of it all. Of course she’d rather not have had this ever brought up in the first place. For as much as she wanted to find out about the Dollhouse’s mind - wiping technology and how they got their hands on something as dangerous as that, she really did not wish to be involved in a manner that she felt was degrading to her and whoever the Dollhouse was about to send her.
“Your dad wanted to see you when you got in,” Jack added quietly, but needlessly. Rose already knew he probably wanted a full debrief of how her meeting with DeWitt had gone. Rose suddenly decided she really needed some distance from all of this for a little bit. For all that she cared for him as much as if he had really been her dad, she just really did not want to be in the same room with Peter Tyler at the moment.
“Actually Jake, can you tell him I’ve gone home to rest?” Rose asked. “I really don’t feel all that great. I’ll give him a debrief first thing tomorrow.”
“Sure, tomorrow,” Jake said, as Rose started going back the way she had come down the hallway.
Towards the lonely flat she called home these days.
________________________________________
Adelle Dewitt walked into her office, still somewhat exhausted from the jet lag that she incurred coming from Los Angeles to London, and back again over the course of a day. Apparently some daft fool either attached or among the directors had decided that since the event that the Vitex heiress wanted a Doll for was in Los Angeles, that the head of the LA Dollhouse would handle the initial transaction with Rose Tyler, despite the fact that there was a perfectly capable director and potential Actives in the London house. The fact that Adelle herself was British was considered a plus in the contractual dealings. With a sigh, Adelle sank into her leather chair in her office, closing her eyes as she gave her self over to that small luxury.
Perhaps it was time for Miss Lonelyhearts to put in another request.
“Are they insane?”
Adelle opened her eyes and was not surprised to find the voice that had boomed so loudly belonging to one Laurance Dominic. All thoughts of relaxation and Miss Lonelyhearts evaporated from her mind seeing the apoplexy on her right hand man’s face.
“To whom are the ‘they’ that you’re referring to Mr. Dominic?” Adelle asked.
“The board for one,” the short - haired blonde said, “who’s bright idea was it to allow Rose Tyler to be a client?”
“Her family, as you know, is very influential,” Adelle told him.
“Her family runs Torchwood!” Dominic exclaimed.
“Peter Tyler runs Torchwood,” Adelle reminded him. “Rose Tyler has never had any part in the organization, active or otherwise.”
“That we know of,” Dominic emphasized, making his suspicions plain. “You don’t think that Torchwood wouldn’t be interested in our ability to mind - wipe somebody and then imprint them with another personality? You don’t think Peter Tyler is above using his own daughter to find out more about it?”
“If they were even remotely aware of our technology or our purpose, they would have had ample enough time and opportunity to do so,” Adelle replied, making her own point. “Afterall, I seem to recall us having a similar conversation when we hired Richard Smith as Sierra’s new handler.”
“And I still have my doubts about him,” Dominic stated. “He did afterall work for Torchwood as well.”
“Publicly denounced them, as I recall,” Adelle once again reminded her right hand man, “Either way if Mr. Smith was a spy we would have noticed by now.”
“However,” Adelle continued, “if you’re that concerned about Ms. Tyler trying to say make off with an Active, there might be a way to keep an eye on her. Another of our clients requested Sierra for the same event that Ms. Tyler is involved in. Perhaps we can utilize Mr. Smith’s valued input to make sure Ms. Tyler’s dealings with our Active are strictly Vitex business and not Torchwood.”
Dominic remained unconvinced, but apparently realized it was a losing fight for he simply plopped down in the chair opposite Adelle.
“Who are we sending?” he asked.
“I’m not sure yet,” Adelle admitted. “Normally I would send Victor, as Ms. Tyler stated she wanted the best, but she also said she wanted somebody a bit older. One with a beard; I highly doubt Victor would look good with a beard.”
Dominic snorted. “Most aren’t.” The other man paused, thinking.
“What about Foxtrot? I know we’ve been rotating between him and Victor with Miss Lonelyhearts, but - “
“No, I can smooth things over with Miss Lonelyhearts if it comes to that.” Adelle said, perhaps a bit too hastily, but Dominic seemed not to notice. Foxtrot was among one of their best actives, sent over from the London House after the incident with Alpha a year back. Mostly used for romantic engagements, lately he had been alternating with a few of the other male actives on the Miss Lonelyhearts assignment. Much as she might argue, he was perfect for the Tyler engagement. He had currently been rehabilitating from an engagement that had gone wrong involving a client and a jealous husband. A husband the client had failed to mention upon request of the Active. “Your right, Mr. Dominic, he would be perfect for the engagement. His rehabilitation is more or less complete at any rate. Tell Topher to prepare a personality profile for a week’s time.”
Dominic nodded and left the room.
Miss Lonelyhearts would apparently have to wait her turn.
