fas anyone?

I bought a $22 ring at an antique fair this weekend, and on the back it has "fas" imprinted into the band in lower case letters. Any ideas on what this means? I wanted to clean the ring, but I am afraid if I use my silver cleaner on something that is not silver or sterling silver, I might ruin it. any ideas?

All I could find were some ebay auctions with similar imprints and FAS 925. Either it's a maker mark or (my guess) a marking indicating the quality of the silver. The wife suggests you just call a jewelry store about cleaning it and ask them about the mark.

Good idea on calling a jewelry store. Be careful using most of the jewelry cleaner dips out there on silver. If there is any base metal exposed due to wear, or low silver content, etc., it can turn that metal black.

Crap! I keep forgetting to ask my Dad about the FAS thing. I know he'll know. I'll call him in a little while. (He's usually up until about 2am or so... hmmm... I wonder why I'm a night owl?)

Hope all is well - Miss you!
