Probably most of you have no idea that I was kind of a trekkie in middle school, even earlier, starting when I was about 5 years old when the show was on prime time. It was our favorite show on TV at the time! (along with Batman). I had a model Enterprise that I built, and my older brother Bob and I would play Star Trek in the basement with our neighbors. He was Spock (he is still very much like Spock, which is so funny to realize after all these years!), our neighbor, Billy was Kirk (Billy was so good looking and blonde, perfect to be Kirk) and I was always someone like Nurse Chapel or some floosie - I never even got to be Uhura! We'd have the ship's bridge set up in our basement, with a big chair in the middle for Kirk (with little legos designed to be the buttons he presses). It was our favorite game when we were kids!
I had such a thing for Star Trek, I know all the episodes, loved Captain Kirk too, but I was never a total trekkie going to conventions or anything. But my guilty pleasure is the original TV series with William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy. I'm happy to see all the episodes are on YouTube now and I can watch them again to my heart's content.
So, as you can guess, this is leading up to the fact Bart and I went to see the Star Trek movie today - I lurrrrrrrved it! It was sensational. Just seeing the USS Enterprise in all her glory again (it really is an amazing design) gave me goose bumps, and I knew - "I'm going to love this movie!" All the actors were fabulous! They all had their funny little quirks about them reminding you of their characters in the original series, yet they had their personalities too. They must have studied who they were playing, for some of the mannerisms and phrases were the same, which always got some big laughs in the audience, such as Spock's infamous "Fascinating" and Bones' "are you out of your Vulcan mind?!" (I loved Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy!) It was so well done and amusing! Scottie was great as well - ah, his Scottish accent! Spock was just right, I really liked him a lot, especially the plotline with Uhura (she was good too!). I ate it all up like ice cream! (I had popcorn at the theatre, but stayed within my WW points budget).
I really loved every minute of the movie. It was exciting, hair raising, funny, great to look at. Chris Pine, who plays Kirk - what eyes! And so often he reminded me just a tad of Shatner - it was so funny! He has that same cocky swagger and heavy breathing as Shatner! LOL And especially when he's wearing the green v-neck captain's shirt as in the show! We all laughed, just seeing all the crew members as young Star Fleet cadets - it was so fun! And Captain Christopher Pike is in it too (I loved him in The Menagerie episode) - it was a great plotline, even the exciting prologue was fun to watch before the credits. It sets you up for everything that happens later.
SPOILER AHEAD:My one gripe was the plot got somewhat convoluted with the time travel, space wharp, black hole thing with the older Spock (played by Leonard Nimoy), and as far as black holes, I was concerned there is a huge gaping black hole in the plot left behind at the end of the movie, perhaps they're saving it for a sequel? There was supposed to be an alternate universe in which Spock's mother and Kirk's father are alive - why didn't they fix that and have it corrected so they're still living? In the series, their parents are alive, and this is all supposed to be before the series begins - so what gives? Sorry, I'm just a stickler on my Star Trek lore - it just want's logical to me!
I had no idea it was Eric Bana that played the villain, Nero - I didn't recognize him at all. He was a weak point in the film, I didn't like him, but I never do, I don't think he's that great an actor - so wooden and unemotional in everything I've seen him in. Now, I know why I didn't like him especially in this. He was miscast, they needed someone with more charisma that evoked evilness. The thing I remember most about Bana (Nero) was his pursed lips looking like Clara Bow all the time! Another little thing I saw that got me was Chekov saying "Yes sir" to Kirk - umm - shouldn't it be "aye aye, captain?"
But, aside from those minor things, it was great. I'll probably see it again. It was so much fun! Go see it if you're a fan of the original series - you'll love it!
