Happy Thanksgiving!

Craziness...I can't believe it is already Thanksgiving! It seems like time, especially in the last week, has been going by so incredibly fast. I already ate an everything at like 12 since my mom went to work. It was kinda nice just to eat at home with my family even though they are crazy. Usually when we eat with big groups of friends people ask ( Read more... )

Philosphical Ramblings anonymous December 1 2002, 00:44:22 UTC
That story sounds pretty sick. If I saw that for myself, I probably would be a vegetarian just because I would be grossed out. I would probably be a vegetarian now if it weren't for the fact that whenever you go somewhere and are served food, people give you meat assuming that you eat it. I don't go against my morals because of convenience though. I used to think that it was okay to eat meat because we were meant to, then I thought it's okay because animals would eat us without a second thought, if we were in their diet. Now I have a whole new view, that is a lot more logical. I could never be the person to actually kill an animal to be eaten (unless maybe if I were starving on an island in the middle of nowhere, because I am told that that makes people do things that they would not normally do), but I still eat it. It does seem kinda contradictory. Now my basic belief is that pleasure is good and pain is bad. So, if we raise animals so that they feel more pleasure than pain within their lifetime, it is moral to raise them for food. If they suffered too much when killed, or if they lived tortured lives, I would definitely be a vegetarian. The one thing that really bothers me though is that they are killed. Death is something that seems evil. Since I don't believe in animal heaven though, I believe that when animals die there is just nothingness, so killing them would not be as evil as it seems. Most people consider life to be sacred, but that is kinda contradictory too because if so, why don't people reproduce like bunnies to produce more life? If it is a sin to end a life, wouldn't it be just as much of a sin to refuse to create a life? Now I am getting too deep =). I knew that this would turn into a philosophical rambling. Anyway, to put it simply, I see nonexistence, life, and death all as neutral, pleasure as good, and pain as bad, so if animals that are used for food feel pleasure more than pain, in addition to bringing us pleasure, it is not immoral to use them as food. I don't want you to think that I have no respect for life though, and that I'm going to become a mass murderer or anything =). Humans base their lives on pursuing pleasure, so it would be immoral to kill a human to eat =). Not that I would either kill or eat someone anyway... =) Okay now this comment is getting weird. Heh. It is very likely that someday I will become a vegetarian though, because meat is too expensive and if my mom is not buying and cooking it then I'd rather not eat it. Well, now you have another viewpoint, as weird as it may be =). I hope you like tofu turkey!
