True peace

My friend Penny's mom passed away last night. I was talking to her right at the moment it happened. I know her sadness is at such a great level right now, and probably will be for quite a while. Having gone through the loss of a parent already helps me to understand how she's feeling. But knowing her mom is no longer in pain, no longer in ill health, and in the arms of two loving men... well, it can only be utopia for her from here on in.

I am grateful to have been able to know her, even for a short time. She came all the way to Illinois for John's high school graduation. I saw her smile and laugh as he walked across the football field to get his diploma. I saw her smile and have tears in her eyes when John hugged her in his cap and gown. I saw her smile and laugh as she sat on our back porch swing as a tiny little pug puppy snuggled up to her neck and shoulders and fell fast asleep. These are all wonderful memories, and ones we can all hold onto when we are feeling sad.

I wish you all happiness in Heaven, dear Melva. You will be well taken care of now by those that have gone before you. Your dear and loving husband Gil, whom I know you have missed dearly for the past 5 years... and Jesus, who will be there for you for time and all eternity.

Rest in peace.
