I met with Professor Haithcock today to talk about a bunch of stuff, namely conducting and higher-level musicianship. I'm so inspired! He told me:
- he didn't set out to become a college director; his original goal was just to replace his HS band director
- he "doesn't have a life" and is "really just a band nerd"
- "the day I stop feeling like I don't know enough is the day I retire"

He told me about all the stuff he did in undergrad to learn about music and style, etc, and about all the stuff he does now to keep up with the current music world...basically he's just constantly listening and reading and trying to learn more about what he doesn't know...he says he'll have his laptop out while watching Michigan football and read reviews of new recordings/performances/etc. Gah, I can't even write about it, he said so much. I just think it's cool that all the work he does to make himself such a great musician/teacher/conductor is an accumulation of little bits of knowledge...it's so much more than just sitting and studying scores, it permeates his everyday life.

I am a BAND GEEK to the CORE! Ha ha, I guess it's a good thing that this stuff makes me excited, though...I think I've chosen the right professional field!
