So!
We have an apartment. It's not *in* downtown Attleboro, but kind of near it. (It's across the street from the old high school, and 3 blocks from the park & zoo.)
The Wrentham place did us the favor of going with someone else, so we happily went with the Attleboro place we had kept. We decided not to take a second Attleboro place, which was about the same square footage as the one we went with, but was 3 bedrooms. And had a ridiculous kitchen. We *almost* went with it anyway, because it was right near the river, but the kitchen was basically impossible, and we've lived with an impossible kitchen for the past 2 years and are *tired* of it.
Once I signed the lease, I did an actual thorough Googling of the landlord, as opposed to a cursory one. He's originally an electrical engineer, which explains why he reminds me of my dad, and moved from there into town finance. He's actually the former Attleboro Town Assessor (that is, the appointed position, not part of the committee that sometimes accompanies the position), and apparently has a minor land-owning empire. He also was caught possibly double dipping back in 2016, as he was being both the Swansea Assessor and the Attleboro Assessor, and was apparently often claiming to be working at both jobs at the same time, which is, in point of fact, quite possible, but not actually a thing you can do when charging towns for it. (Actually, in looking at the aftermath, he was quite credibly said not to have been, but he was also using some fancy avoidance of responsibility tactics to begin with.) Anyway, so he survived the 2016 exposure, but was eventually not rehired in Swansea due to some contractual issues, and not retained in Attleboro last year due to that and other things weighing negatively in his political favor. He lives in Plainville, and had been an (elected) member of the Board of Assessors there until last year, when he lost the race. (Actually, he lost two races, one for Selectman and one for Assessor.)
Soooo the point is, now he has more time on his hands to be a landlord. He also *really cares* about his house, and it legitimately is in great shape. (He's restoring the third floor at the moment.)
Of course, he's also a nerd who goes on and on, and will be occasionally around, so I have decided that one of the useful things about this house is that I will learn better how to communicate with supervisory authorities, which will be useful for the next several years.
Anyway, we're not doing the actual Big Move til the 27th, but I plan to do a lot of small loads of things that movers don't do well with, over the next couple weeks. (Like, food. And clothes. And random pictures.)
