Dear Mr. Gibson,
Hello. How are you doing? I am hope you are in fine health, physically and mentally. Before I go any furthe rin this letter, I'd like to let you know that I fully respect you as an artist of film. You make good movies.
I also fully respect your film, The Passion of The Christ. I'm actually glad that you made this controversial film. I wish every filmmaker could put his beliefs into the medium, instead of making films like Deuce Bigelow and Booty Call. You didn't care about who criticized the film, whether it be the Jews or the movie executives who tried to get you to put the film in the english language. You didn't care. You put your beliefs ahead of money, and it paid off.
However, I must say, with The Passion you had almost every Christian on your side, rooting for the film. I've recently heard your next film, Apocalypto, will start filming soon. It struck me as odd, however, when I found out you were filming the entire movie in the ancient Mayan language. I must ask, Why?
The Passion was not a succesful movie because of the Aramaic. It was a succesful movie because you put a fact-based depiction of the major event in the Holy Bible, that people wanted to see. It gave them hope that there was at least one hardworking Christian in the film industry doing what Christians should do - spreading your beliefs.
There's not many people who follow the Mayan religion anymore. There's not many people interested in the Mayans anymore. It seems that recently desert war movies are doing horribly lately(Alexander, Troy), and the only movies set in the far past that have done well are yours and Gladiator. But they both told a great story that interested many people. Will the Mayans hold this principle? Maybe.
Now, like I said, I respect you. I loved the Lethal Weapon series. Ransom was a great film, as was Signs, Payback, and Mad Max. I also see that you have two other films you're working on, that go back to your old set of movies. That's good!
I might be wrong. This new film might be really succesful. If so, I'll....eat a big sandwich. But might I offer a suggestion? Make the resurrection film. Show Christ coming back to life. It's something that everyone would like to see.
I also feel I must apoligize for the South Park's depiction of you in their episode "The Passion of The Jew". It's all in good fun, though. Take care.
Sincerely,
Shea Kelly.
