Pretentious cocks
Things that I hate: people who think that any arbitrary aspect of culture A is, by virtue of its association with culture A, superior to it's corresponding aspect from culture B--the latter usually being the individual's origin culture--because the individual likes something from culture A and has thus sworn his or her blind devotion to everything associated with culture A.
Case in point: A comic artist who is clearly American writing from a clearly American point of view for a clearly American audience in a clearly American language who calls his comic a manga and insists that it be read from right to left.
Enter Dark Blood (pretentious angst, anyone?).
Okay, you like Japanese comics. I get that. But there is nothing inherently superior about arranging your text boxes and action so that they must be read from right to left--as the Japanese do--over arranging those things from left to right--as your own culture and readers do. It is not superior, trendy, or artistic. It is lame. It is annoying. And it is frustrating, particularly seeing as the text in each bubble of the goddamned thing must be read from left to right, causing the Typewriter Effect.
Yeah, it's great when American publishers publish a manga originally from Japan so that it must be read from right to left. But that's because that's the way that the thing was originally written, and there are very good cultural reasons to keep it that way (such as left-handed villains). The Typewriter Effect can be overcome.
It's cool for them, because that's their culture. It's not cool for you. It does nothing more than separate you from the rest of us in a way that puts a sign over your head that screams "I'm separating myself from the rest of you because this is better and I'm doing it this way, therefore I am better than you!" You might as well walk around calling people plebeians to their faces. Elitist cock.
This isn't the use of silverware. This isn't hygiene. It's a fucking direction of reading. Get over yourself.
