I've never heard the Cool Stuff Theory, but it's a perfect way to describe why a guy I recommended Tolkien to thought it was "laaaaaame" while still being an enormous Star Wars geek. All a matter of perspective, I guess... Although the fact that Steven doesn't think that full-plate armor and great big honking greatswords are cool made me sporfle, given, y'know, Aliera and Kieron's Greatsword, which I remember being described as flipping enormous.

And FWIW, I find that Cool Stuff Theory-spawned literature is often the best, kinda like watching people geek out about their preferred subject IRL. As long as it's reasonably comprehensible (lookin' at you, POB) and doesn't overwhelm the story itself, which it sounds like your Cool Stuff definitely doesn't, it pushes a book from "ok, this is a pretty neat scenario/character/idea" to "awwwww yeah, talk nerdy to me!" I dunno, there's just something about an author's palpable excitement over their subject that sparks off a similar excitement in me.

Anyway, congrats on laying this one to rest! Sounds like you deserve a break.
