really pretty art!!!!!! Chapter 2 the way to a guy’s heart is through the movies you watch with him
Late one Saturday night, right after Noah had showered and gotten into shorts and an old shirt, perfect late spring sleeping wear, he heard the sound of pebbles on glass. Frowning he opened the window to find Luke outside his room.
-what are you doing? He signed, grinning just a bit when Luke literally jumped around, clearly excited.
Luke just looked at him, grinning widely before signing back
-sht! Not allowed outside so let’s not be heard. Want to watch a movie?
Noah didn’t really feel like watching a movie, he felt like snuggling into his blankets with a book, but he didn’t want to turn Luke down.
-I don’t know, what if you get caught? He signed
-I’ve got a plan. Just ask your parents if I can sleep over, let them call my parents! It will be fun.
Noah couldn’t hide his surprise. Luke wanted to sleep over? He hardly knew him, what if Noah snored or killed him in his sleep.
-no! He signed but the disappointed, hurt look on Luke’s face cut through his heart.
“Never mind, I’ll go home.” Luke turned around and left for his own house, his shoulders hunched.
Noah watched Luke go until the boy had climbed up the rain pipe and through his own bedroom window. He felt bad, for letting Luke down, for turning him down in a hurry. Just today a new movie was delivered, one Noah was sure Luke would also like.
Trying not to over think what he was doing he pulled on some sweats before going downstairs and into the living room. His parents were on the couch together, watching a movie as well. Noah knew his older brothers and sister were at their friends for parties and sleepovers.
“Hi honey, I thought you were going to bed? Want to watch this movie with us?” his mother scooted over on the couch to make room for Noah but he just shook his head. His parents were watching the parent trap, a movie Noah didn’t want to see, even if he wasn’t planning on asking if Luke could sleep over.
-can Luke come over to watch a movie and stay the night?
His parents looked at him with open mouth.
“Just to be sure Noah, you want to invite the kid next door for a movie night and sleep over?” his father asked
Noah just nodded
-Can you call his parents to ask?
Luke’s dad turned to his mother
“Do we even have their number, Charlie?”
“No, no we don’t but I can walk next door and ask if you really want this, Noah?”
Noah nodded and signaled for his mother to follow him out.
They walked towards the Snyder’s front door in silence, Charlene knocked on the window softly, not wanting to wake the younger kids.
It only took a minute before Holden opened the door
“Charlene, can I help you with something?” he asked, clearly surprised to see his neighbor on their porch at 9.30 pm.
“Yes Holden you can, Noah had a question for Luke, I hope that it’s ok with you guys.” She turned to Noah.
“Noah, why don’t you ask Mister Snyder yourself?”
Noah smiled shyly at the man in front of him and started to sign
-Can Luke come over to my place for a movie and a sleep over?
Holden smiled warmly at Noah before signing back
-Sure, if Luke wants to, it’s ok with us.
“I will walk upstairs to get him, the other children are already asleep and they have a habit of having really bad tantrums when woken up so we try to avoid that as much as possible. Please come in while I will get Luke.”
Noah and his mother walked into the hallway while Holden disappeared up the stairs. It only took a moment before Luke; already in pajama came tiptoeing down.
When he saw Noah and his mother standing in their hallway he stopped dead in his track. He looked down into Noah’s eyes before he started to smile and darted down the last steps.
“Hi Noah! What are you doing here?” he asked, his eyes filled with mirth.
-want to come over to watch a movie and spend the night?
“Can I, dad?” Luke turned to Holden with a pleading look in his eyes.
“Sure, kiddo. Just grab your toothbrush and clean clothes and we will see you in the morning.”
While Luke went to pack his bag, Noah awkwardly bounced on the heels of his feet, watching the family pictures that decorated the large hallway.
Lily came down the stairs to say hello to Charlene and Noah, explaining that Luke was looking for his favorite pj’s before she went upstairs again at the call of one of the younger children.
When Luke came darting down the stairs again, Noah’s face lit up and he grinned at the younger boy that was clearly excited to join the Mayer’s for the night. Charlene smiled; happy her son was finally opening up to someone. Although she was just a little hurt that someone wasn’t her, she was happy there was someone to watch a movie with in his life.
“We will feed him before sending him home. Is there any particular time you need him?” She asked Holden.
“No, unless you go to church, in that case we would like him home before 9.30. We leave at 9.45 ourselves but if you don’t go he can miss mass for this time. We will be back around elevenish.”
“We don’t go to church so he can stay with us till after you got back!” Charlene waved at Holden when Luke joined them, he kissed his father on the cheek and they both left to the house next door.
While Luke went to say hello to his dad, Noah went into the kitchen for some soda’s and a bag of crisps.
“I will just go and get Luke a stretcher and some linen, I’ll put them up in your room, Noah. “ Charlene went upstairs and Luke and Noah quickly followed.
“Noah, are you sure you want this? I can always go home after the movie if you really don’t want to spend time with me?” Luke looked Noah in the eyes, his insecurity written clearly on his expressive face.
-no, no, I want you here. I’m sorry about earlier, you caught me by surprise Noah signed while he smiled at Luke.
Charlene came into the room with Luke’s bed and bed linens and after making the bed, both boys got comfortable on Noah’s bed.
“What are we watching tonight?” Luke asked Noah but Noah only grinned at pointed at the television. He pushed play and the movie started to play. Luke positively squeehed when he saw the title of the movie and the boys settled down together to watch a space ranger and his cowboy friend find a new home together.
Halfway through the movie Noah felt himself getting more than comfortably warm. He and Luke had pulled a blanket over them while they were both reclining against the headboard of his bed to watch the movie. Noah’s eyes grew heavy and it only took him a minute more to fall asleep.
Luke was so enthralled by the movie he never noticed Noah falling asleep, only when Noah rested his head on Luke’s shoulder did he look up. Seeing his friend deep in sleep, his face relaxed and open made him wonder about Noah once more. He wanted to know what happened that made Noah so closed off from the world, without friends or speech. He brushed a stray straw of hair from Noah’s forehead. His tummy was fluttering a bit, he wanted Noah to speak to him, he wanted Noah to be happy and he was going to make sure there would be a moment, when Noah would be just that.
That night, right before the went to bed, Charlene opened the door to Noah’s room a bit further to find Noah fast asleep, cuddled against Luke, who was watching a movie. Her mouth fell slack and for a moment she just stood there, mesmerized by the boys on the bed. Her Noah hadn’t cuddled or sought physical contact with anyone since the accident all those years ago.
Luke looked up and smiled hesitantly to Noah’s mother, who smiled back and closed the door again, leaving it open just a crack before heading towards her own bed for a good night sleep.
