Well, more than a month ago
I promised to update "soon". But in the grand scheme of things, I suppose this counts, doesn't it?
So, since the last time I posted, the Cardinals WON THE WORLD SERIES. Back in May, I'd decided to start gathering Cards fans together to watch playoff games in New York City, and I created a
yahoo group to that effect. For the first few games in October, fewer than ten Cards fans showed up at Deweys, our bar of choice, but by the end of the World Series we probably
had around 150 of us or so. The last out of the World Series was really something special. I stood with about 12 other Cardinals fans who'd become my nearest and dearest during the last week. And we were all
CLUTCHING each other with anticipation. And after that beautiful swinging strike, we
went crazy,
folks. Champagne everywhere. I couldn't stop screaming. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.
An absolutely glorious moment. I'll never forget it.
And of course that's to say nothing of the NLCS. As fantastic as Game 5 of the World Series was, I think that the Cards/Mets Game 7 at Dewey's was
almost as good. We had a
celebrity blogger in the house, and man
did he ever bring the party to Deweys. That game was, I think, the most intense baseball game I've ever sat through. I still can't believe it ended the way it did: two outs, bases loaded, Carlos Beltran at the plate. As Mike Shannon would say, Ol'
Abner did it again!
I have had other things going on in my life, the most notable being my new hobby: brewing beer. (I'm keeping a
beer journal if anyone's interested in reading about the brewing, bottling and naming process, as well as my general beer thoughts.) I've been interested in trying a slew of new beers for several months now, and back in September I read about homebrewing and decided, "eh, what the hell, I can do this." And as it turns out, I can. I'm lucky in that I have not one, but TWO good friends who are brewing experts, and both are generously willing to help me out in my endeavor. It was the morning after the World Series when I finally got a chance
to taste my very own homebrew, and all the books were right: beer tastes MUCH, MUCH better when you're making it yourself.
I'm at something of a crossroads when it comes to my career: my assistant job that I have now is fairly easy and pays well, although I feel as though I can do a lot more. I'm not really sure where to go, though: I'm not ready to write theatre reviews full time, but I do think I need to get back into theatre. I'm going to think about it and pray about it and see where I need to go . And continue to check the job listings, of course.
On Wednesday morning, my friend Anne wrote me and said (in a letter full of post-election glee), "WOW, 2006 has been a great year, hasn't it? My trip to Germany, your trip to Disneyland, our trip to Pittsburgh together, the Cardinals WINNING THE WORLD SERIES, and the Democrats finally taking back congress!" And she's absolutely right. It's been a terrific year; I can't wait to see what else 2006 has in store.
