That House works as well as it does is definitely due to the brilliance of Hugh Laurie. For example, Three Stories falls under the Rashomonesque style of telling a story which some people just don't like (can seem too contrived, there can be too much of a push to make it seem profound and complex) and I can generally understand the argument, but Hugh Laurie makes Three Stories work so well since House is so compelling. We also see this with A Trip to the Dentist from Veronica Mars as Kristen Bell is my one true love is so darned awesome in the role.
It's hard to actually pick five favorite episodes, since my appreciation for them all is constantly evolving, and I always find new things to enjoy and analyze. It's more of a "which five episodes do I find myself really liking right now?" than a perpetual fave five.
Some people I've known do a "dry January" for the express purpose of recovering from the holidays as a matter of fact. Then again, they get really sloshed during the holiday season on a regular basis. My friend used to hold his Feb./early March vodka tasting party to get people back in the drinking swing of things....
