Just had a conversation with a work buddy of mine. She's getting a divorce, but because of her culture, she's expected to pay her soon-to-be-ex-husband the $7,000 he used to buy her.

I had to make her repeat that.
Her husband bought her for $7,000. Here, in the United States.
And he has the "right" to beat her and control her finances and have as many other wives as he wants, he could even kill her and get away with it culturally. And her family is about ready to disown her because of the shame of her divorcing him. Apparently, she's a "slut." That's what her own family is calling her!
