I signed on to AOL some time ago and read a blurb. It read, "Amputation Right For Three Armed Boy?" This immediately got my attention and I clicked on the headline to watch the video.
The two-month old Chinese boy, whose name sounds like, "Jay Jay", is in the hospital because he may need amputation to get rid of one of his three arms. The question is, which arm should be amputated? He has two left arms and a right arm and is considered to be a "medical marvel" beacause he has survived. What makes his situation worse is that he only has one kidney and a spinal condition, so his three arms are in fact, the LEAST of his problems.
Although his two arms on his left side are fully developed in length (which is amazing), they are both not fully functional. One is smaller and the other lacks a palm. The arm to get amputated is the less functional one and it is said that he can get his arm amputated before he is a year old. After that, he will most likely be able to function normally as a child.
There are a few questions in my mind.
1)Was his mother drinking or taking any toxic substances that affected his growth and development as a fetus?
2)Is his case strictly genetic? Is it just a mutation of some sort?
3)Can cases such as his be prevented in the future?
I hope he doesn't die as a result of the amputation because that would be heartbreaking and devastating for the family. I mean, imagine it being you and/or your family. What would it feel like to be pregnant or have your wife or girlfriend pregnant, she has the baby but it has a serious medical condition and dies? I mean, it would seem like a death of hope because you waited 9 months for the child and to see it suffer and die would be extremely sad. What hurts is that things like this happen every day. There are individuals and families who would practically sell all their possessions to feel the joy and go through the heartache that children bring, although they are a blessing from God, and can't. [This is one reason why I prefer adoption rather than abortion because if you cannot afford to have a child, you should give it up and not kill it.]
Well, all in all, there are still medical conditions in today's world that are untreatable and/or continue to amaze physicians. I just hope he makes it.
