I just came back from a Thanksgiving contra dance!
Contra is a form of dance that is to the northeast what line dancing is to the southwest. There is a caller that calls out the steps, and while you come with a partner there tends to be more and more partner switching as the night goes on, facilated by the patterns your moving in. There were three age groups of people there, 12 and under, couples between 18 and 25, and couples over 40. Somewhere during the partner switching I got glares from some of the 18-25 women; I took to the music, the rhythm and the steps immediately. My only regret about the night is that I didn't bring my linen skirt with me- a twirling skirt is a contra must.
So tonight I saw another side of Boston besides the shows, shopping and traffic, and learned a little about my New England roots, and danced with some very nice guys.
This is a new Thanksgiving activity, supplimenting the annual forced march around Walden Pond, which we've done every year as long as we've come to Boston. And like any trip to Boston, tomorrow we'll play more poker. Anyways, the boys are turning on a movies, so this is it for now.
Hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving!
