Get Closer

Oct 13, 2011 22:53

90 second video. I really don't want to say too much about this, because the message is strongest if you go into it blank. It doesn't take up a lot of your time. Sound is not necessary for the message, though apparently the song used is powerful for some people.

I, uh, didn't find that particularly powerful, because I spent most of the video being creeped out by the giant cartoony bear, and wondering, "what ulterior motive does the person in the suit have for wanting a lot of hugs?" I thought it was going to be a child safety PSA or something with a twist ending.

Let's not go into what that says about my assumptions.

Actually, a LOT of the YouTube comments mention pedobear. :P

Hm. Maybe I'm wrong about how powerful it becomes when seen blank, since I didn't go into it that way?

Well, Alexa spent the whole video going "awwww," so I guess you're 1 for 2 in our house.

I had the same...ehh...pedobear reaction..."Why is there a giant plush bear in that street for no apparent reason?" etc.

I think one unfortunate aspect of our culture is that many things that have once seemed innocent have been stripped of that nature. Perhaps it's an aspect of the "culture of fear" that creates this reaction. Certainly, a lack of trust and community reinforces it. I also think a lot of the darker corners of the internet embrace this kind of destruction of innocence with a "creeper" mentality that disturbs me somewhat, and thus the "pedobear" comments on Youtube.

Personally, I liked the ad. I like almost anything where the message is about overcoming barriers to trust and closeness, really.

Except Evangelion. I can't stand that anime. :P
