Hm. Can you tell me a little more about what you're thinking for We Know the Way, please? I'm feeling a bit dubious about whether the "music video" can actually be separated from the movie.

If you slice off the first few seconds and the last few seconds, none of the actual characters from the movie are in the video (which is why I thought it was okay). There is a story in the video that is different than the song (sort of) of the passing of the role of wayfinder from one generation to the next. (The guy in the red hat leads the journey in the first part and at the very end of the song, he passes the role on to another, younger man.)

I think the song stands alone from the movie - fitting in the broad genre of "world rock" or "fusion". I think it explores idea of identity and adventure, and also the importance of passing traditions from one generation to the next . I think there are lots of directions a story could go that would not have anything to do with the movie.

Is that what you are looking for?

Yeah, I'm a lot more comfortable with the song than the video. (Honestly if you'd just nominated that, I wouldn't bat an eye - and I will probably approve the song - but you nominating both together causes me to want to check with you.) I'm still thinking over the video. I don't think I can agree that none of the characters from the movie are in the music video. They are not named characters, but they are movie characters who have a specific context in the movie ( ... )

FWIW, I would not be asking for fic or art that fits seemlessly (or at all) in the Moana world. For the music video I would be asking for a story about the leader and his successor - but I'd leave it up to the writer if they wanted to fit it in the Moana world, or if they wanted to cross them into another canon, or just write some story about a relationship like that. HOWEVER, once it is nominated, I know that what I ask may not be what other people ask.

I am fine with whatever you decide. I hope you decide to allow the song, even if the video is out. I can't find a version without the first few seconds, but if it helps, here is a link that starts at the point where the song starts:

Thank you

I have approved the song as We Know the Way (Moana Soundtrack) ft. Lin-Manuel Miranda - Opetaia Foa'i (Song). I have decided not to approve the music video nomination, but have left it for now in case there is something else you would like to use your nomination slot for.

For the record, I don't think you are 'cheating' or trying to get around the rules of the exchange, at all, but we have different opinions on whether the clip is a separable part of the movie and the characters original characters that can easily be turned to multiple interpretations beyond the context established by the movie.

It's fine by me if you want to mention the clip if writing prompts for the song, as an *option* to inspire your writer (or artist or podficcer), though I am hoping that Moana & her generation do not feature in an eventual work.
