...in case you haven't heard already! On Tuesday, the 10th, I had made plans with Kim to have lunch with her the following Friday. I told Michael about the lunch date just so he knew our dog would have to wait a little longer for me to get home. He seemed a bit hesitant and worried and he asked if I could try to be home by 4 on Friday. I thought he was worried about Belle so I started saying things like "she should be okay. It'll only be an hour. She'll be okay, right?" Then he could see that I was getting worried about her and then finally, he revealed that he just wanted to take me out to a nice dinner. Yep, I ruined my own surprise. Go me! ...or did I?
For a while now we had been talking about going to a nice place for the sake of going out to a nice place and not just to celebrate something. So we get dressed up and we go to the Chart House in Encinitas. We got there half an hour early and he told me to wait outside cause he wanted to try to get us a seat by the ocean view. Shortly after he comes back outside to retrieve me and we did end up getting a table in the corner right by the ocean view. Dinner was delicious, although I had no idea the platter I ordered was going to have so much deep fried stuff but I wasn't going to worry about it for the night. After dessert (molten lava chocolate cake, yum!), he goes away from the table to "go to the bathroom".
While he was gone, I realized that I forgot to tell him that something changed in our renters' insurance policy. Immediately after Michael approaches the table, I start quickly start blabbing about renters insurance. In the middle of it, he put his finger on top of my lips and made a "shh" notion and held my hand in his. He took out his ipod nano (which has external speakers) and started playing "Chasing Cars" by Snow Patrol, one of our songs. Then he proceeded to talk about how our love has bloomed over the last two years and how he wants to spend the rest of his life with me. Then he bent down on one knee, took out the ring box from his shirt pocket, opened the box to reveal the ring and said "Make me the happiest man on Earth." My "yes" was automatic and my fingers were shaking. It was the most awesome moment of my life.
I loved how it was done in a way where lots of people in the restaurant didn't notice us so it was a bit private. There was an older couple behind us who had witnessed the whole thing and had sent us a bottle of champagne on their tab. Later on the female portion of the older couple came over to congratulate us, telling us that she and her husband were about to spend their 40th anniversary together. "Marriage is hard but its also lots of fun." she said. I saw her gushing to the table of girls next to her later on and the girls just ended up smiling and gushing and looking at us!
I found it funny that with all of those "hints" I had been giving him (reading bridal magazines, watching "Say Yes to the Dress") all made him think I had suspected he was going to propose when I had no frickin' idea!
