PART ONE
“At least it wasn’t a little kid this time.” Dean once was beaten up by a little kid in S4 in the episode “Wishful Thinking” (4.08)
“Oh crap” is Dean’s catch phrase from 5.08 “Changing Channels”
Agent Page and Agent Jones: Robert Page and Jimmy Jones are both members of Led Zeplin
Grace Nichols was the birth name of Nichelle Nichols, the actress who originally played Uhura on “Star Trek”
PART TWO
The motel Sam and Dean are staying at is a real Motel/Restaurant. Platter Restaurant and Motel seemed like a pretty perfect motel for the boys’ investigation-it’s a few blocks from the Crivitz Area Library (2 minute walk) and a few blocks from the Crivitz Police Station.
The More than Brothers Code: aka Becky is a “Supernatural” fangirl who also happens to be a Sam/Dean slasher. She is the webmistress of the Sam/Dean website “More Than Brothers” (morethanbrothers.net).
Family interviews: Jerry Lundegaard is a character from “Fargo”
Flying Bovines: I made this up. I have no idea if the Platter Restaurant and Motel actually employs a Mother Goose theme, but thought the opportunities for humor were too good to pass up.
PART THREE
Troll Princess Lovelace is named for Ada Lovelace, who is widely regarded as the first programmer. Dux Holberton is named for Frances Elizabeth “Betty” Holberton, one of the six original programmers of ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer), which was the first general-purpose electronic digital computer.
The evil librarian: the bad guy’s name comes from “The Librarian” tv-movies. Flynn Carsen (as played by Noah Wiley) is a librarian who protects a secret collection of artifacts.
PART FOUR
Castiel’s credentials were first shown in 5.03 “Free to be You and Me.”
Crush him Wicked Witch of the East style: Dorothy Gale’s house crushed the Wicked Witch of the East when she first arrived in Oz in “The Wizard of Oz.”
“Carver Edlund” is Chuck Shurley’s pseudonym.
Charles Holcombe was the serial killer from episode 2.22 “Legacy” (the housecleaner from Kansas City) and George Turner was the killer (a paraplegic who convinced his brother Lucas to kidnap victims from Detroit to experiment on then feed the bodies to his pigs) from episodes 4.25 and 4.26 “To Hell…” “…And Back.”
CCD classes: CCD is the basic teachings of the Catholic church, which are taught to school children so they can learn the roots of Catholicism. It stands for Confraternity of Christian Doctrine.
He had, in fact, been one of the easiest LEOs to work with in her time at the BAU: LEO= Law Enforcement Officer
PART FIVE
Flynn Carsen was born Thomas Harris: Thomas Harris is the author who wrote “The Silence of the Lambs”, “Hannibal”, and “Red Dragon” all starring the notable serial killer, Hannibal Lector.
Agent Ellsworth Williams: Bobby’s alias was chosen as a combination of characters Jim Beaver has played previously. Jim Beaver was “Whitney Ellsworth” in Deadwood and played Sheriff Williams on Criminal Minds episode 3.07 “Identity.”
PART SIX
Pink Panty Story: Dean references this story in Supernatural episode 5.04 “The End” to convince his future self of his identity. The basic story is that an old girlfriend of Dean’s asked him to put on her pink satiny panties and Dean kind of liked it.
Couldn’t poop for a week: Why Dean doesn’t like Castiel zapping him, referenced in Supernatural 5.03 “Free to Be You and Me”
Activia commercial: Activia is a yogurt advertised to “keep you regular.” I hate those commercials. SO. FUCKING. MUCH.
Black Hoodie. Dean wore a black hoodie in the Supernatural episode 1.12 “Faith.” It was so big on him that I personally think he stole it from Sam and he wears it when he doesn’t feel well.
EPILOGUE
Dermestid beetles: dermestid beetles are used to clean bones because they eat animal flesh quickly and completely. Their presence in the hole is the reason why Dean found Grace Nichol’s femur completely stripped of flesh only 4 months after her death.
“Why do we need a shovel?: Because they need to dig up the hole even more to find every bone of the victims to burn. Grave digging is a long and dirty process.
